FONT SIZE=4>A record total of 355,102 student-athletes competed in sports for which the NCAA conducts championships, plus Division I-A football, during the 1999-00 academic year. The total represented a 0.4 percent increase over 1998-99, when the previous record was established.
Men's participation increased by 0.4 percent from 207,686 to 208,483 (an increase of 797) while women's participation grew from 145,875 to 146,619 (an increase of 744, or 0.5 percent).
The NCAA compiles participation figures annually.

The NCAA Division I Committee on Athletics Certification has ruled on the certification status of the first two Division I member institutions that have completed the Association's second cycle of athletic certification.
The second round is being completed on a 10-year cycle rather than the previous five-year cycle. All 318 Division I active members participate in the certification process.
