AEC Cabinet forwards set of amateurism proposals

The NCAA's Division I Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet has approved several amendments to amateurism deregulation proposals and forwarded them to the Division I Management Council for further consideration.

The Division I Management Council will consider the proposals at its April 9-10 meeting.

The Management Council currently is considering the package of proposals aimed at bylaws affecting pre-enrolled students. The Council forwarded the package to the NCAA's membership for comment in October, not endorsing it but providing initial approval solely for the purpose of initiating comment among member schools. The cabinet has recommended that the Management Council support the amendments and forward them to the Association's members for an additional 90-day comment period before a final vote in October 2001.

New technology to aid data collection process

A technologically advanced method for managing NCAA member institutions' basic information has been unveiled.

The new Membership Services Database, which was launched in February, will enable NCAA staff to more efficiently meet existing and future data-collection and analysis needs.

The Oracle-based database will record any number of informational items about each institution -- from personnel and addresses (including e-mail addresses) to sports sponsorship and conference membership information. The database is searchable and includes information back to 1997.

MINORITY ISSUES

Committee plans to implement new Leadership Institute

The NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee (MOIC) is continuing with plans to implement its Leadership Institute this summer.

The MOIC began finalizing the curriculum for the workshops and soliciting companies, consultants and other individuals skilled in delivering programs in each area. The group also began soliciting athletics personnel who would help facilitate the program by applying the curriculum to an athletics setting.

The MOIC Leadership Institute was developed as a leadership-training initiative to enhance competencies necessary to administer athletics programs for mid-level ethnic minority administrators at the institution and conference levels.
