The Football Study Oversight Committee identified five major areas for study during its recent meeting.
The study areas are student-athlete welfare and graduation rates; membership criteria and classification; the two-year moratorium on the number of postseason bowl games; increased financial pressures associated with Division I football; and diversity issues, particularly the lack of minority head coaches in Division I.
The committee is targeting its next meeting in May to review initial reports from groups assigned to study those issues.

Allocated $1 million by the Division I Budget Committee for new championships initiatives, the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet considered almost three times that amount in requests during its February 6-8 meeting.
The cabinet developed two prioritized lists, one for the $1 million allocation and another for funds that may be realized through cost-saving initiatives.

The Division II Membership Review Project Team has developed a series of proposals designed to strengthen provisional membership requirements without adversely affecting the current active membership.
For active members, the proposed changes focus on increasing the Division II sports sponsorship requirement from eight to 10 sports and in having the membership meet a minimum financial aid requirement by choosing from several options.
The proposals are being forwarded to the Division II Management Council for consideration. Most of the proposals would require action at the 2002 Convention to become effective.

The Division III Membership Committee has recommended that the Division III Management Council sponsor legislation for the 2002 NCAA Convention that would provide more specific requirements for provisional members.
The committee believes the current requirement for Division III provisional members to comply with NCAA legislation is too vague.
