Member institutions are reminded that February 2 is the deadline for postgraduate scholarship nominations in fall sports. Faculty athletics representatives are responsible for submitting the completed nomination package to the appropriate district chair.
The NCAA awards 174 scholarships of $5,000 each year to student-athletes who have excelled academically and athletically. Athletics participation is limited to those sports for which the NCAA conducts a championship or designates as emerging sports. Students must be nominated in the academic year in which they complete their final season of eligibility for intercollegiate athletics under NCAA legislation.
Nominees must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.000 (based on a maximum 4.000) or its equivalent and must be nominated by the faculty athletics representative or director of athletics of an NCAA member institution. A candidate must have signified the intention to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a graduate student.

The Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is recommending that legislation be proposed to require institutions to place prospects on an Institutional Request List at the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse within 10 days after a prospect makes an official visit to the institution, signs an institutional financial aid agreement or signs a National Letter of Intent, whichever comes earliest.
The SAAC believes that such legislation would provide an earlier opportunity for schools to advise prospects on meeting NCAA initial-eligibility standards and to decrease the number of instances in which prospects become partial or nonqualifiers because they discovered their educational shortcomings too late in the process.
The Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee also supports the proposal.

Division II conference offices have until February 15 to apply for strategic initiative grants related to the division's long-range financial plan.
For the 2001-02 cycle, conferences will be able to apply for funding for enhancing conference student-athlete advisory committees and for developing the roles of senior woman administrators and faculty athletics representatives at their member institutions. Those programs will be administered through Division II conference offices.
The Division II long-range financial plan was approved in concept by the Division II Presidents Council in November, and the membership reviewed the plan at the NCAA Convention in January. A copy of the long-range plan is available on NCAA Online (www.
ncaa.org) under the Administration and Governance section. To find the plan, click on "governance," then "Division II" and then "Division Planning Documents."

A group of current and former student-atheltes at the University of California, Los Angeles, is attempting to change NCAA rules regarding financial aid and benefits.
An Associated Press article said that the new group, known as the Collegiate Athletes Coalition, will seek an increase in room and board allowances and full health care coverage during the offseason, among other things. The group is backed by the United Steelworkers of America.
Despite the support of the steelworkers union, the group indicated it is not a union and that it would not attempt to organize player strikes.
