Littlepage elevated to AD at Virginia

Virginia has elevated Craig Littlepage to director of athletics. Littlepage succeeds Terry Holland, who stepped down in May and became special assistant to the president.

Littlepage, who has been fulfilling athletics director responsibilities on an interim basis since June, joined Virginia's athletics administration in 1990 as an assistant athletics director. Since then, he has served as associate athletics director for four years and senior associate athletics director for the past six years. In addition to completing stints as an assistant men's basketball coach at Virginia from 1976 to 1982 and again from 1988 to 1990, Littlepage also has been an assistant coach at Villanova and Yale. He was head men's basketball coach at Pennsylvania from 1982 to 1985 and guided the program at Rutgers from 1985 to 1988.

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference hired Marlynn R. Jones as assistant commissioner for compliance and external affairs. Jones has been chief of staff for Daryl L. Jones, a Florida state senator ... The Presidents' Athletic Conference announced Joe Onderko as information director to succeed Joe Klimchak. Onderko will retain duties as sports information director at Westminster (Pennsylvania), a position he has held since January 1995. Klimchak also will continue as full-time sports information director at Grove City ... William Wolper assumed responsibilities as director of information/assistant to the commissioner at the Iowa Conference. John Williams, professional development program coordinator at the national office, was elevated to associate director of championships.

The national office named Jason Fordham as software technical support specialist. Fordham has been a contractor with the Association since July.

Kim Ford was elevated to professional development program coordinator at the national office. Ford was an intern at the NCAA last year.

CORRECTION

Two sites for the Division I women's basketball Midwest Regional were reversed in the NCAA Championships Dates and Sites supplement in the August 27 issue of The NCAA News. Iowa State University will host the 2002 Midwest Regional at the Hilton Coliseum March 23 and 25, 2002, while the University of New Mexico's University Arena is the site for the 2003 Midwest Regional March 29 and 31, 2003.

A graphic on page 2 of the August 13 issue of The NCAA News incorrectly identified an artificial playing surface. A new surface at Tulane is AstroPlay. Other recent AstroPlay installations include those at Kansas, Oklahoma State, Army, Texas-El Paso and Illinois.

DEATHS

Former Northern Illinois football coach Howard W. Fletcher died August 23 at the age of 88. Fletcher guided the program to a 74-48-1 record from 1956 to 1968.

Don Flavin, former wrestling coach at Northern Illinois, died August 2. He was 72. Flavin served as head coach of the school's wrestling program from 1968 through the 1985-86 season and compiled a 160-82-12 record in duals.

A former women's basketball player, Audrey Gomez, was found shot to death recently. Gomez competed as a part-time starter at Southern California during the 1994-95 season.
