Die to retire as president at Hendrix

Ann Die has announced plans to retire as president at Hendrix, effective in August. Die currently is chair of the NCAA Division III Presidents Council and is a member of the NCAA Executive Committee.

Die has served as president at Hendrix since 1992. During her tenure, she worked as president or chair of six national higher education bodies, including chair of the board of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities and chair of the American Council on Education's Council of Fellows. Before assuming the presidency at Hendrix, Die was dean of the H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College and associate provost at Tulane from 1988 to 1992. She also was assistant to the executive vice-president for academic and student affairs at Lamar.

Die earned a bachelor's degree at Lamar in 1966, a master's degree at Houston in 1969 and a doctorate in counseling psychology at Texas A&M in 1977. A licensed psychologist, Die will become vice-president and partner in the higher education practice of A.T. Kearney, Inc., an international consulting and executive search firm.

Fisk appointed Carolynn Reid-Wallace as president. Wallace has been senior vice-president for education and programming at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and formerly served as assistant secretary for postsecondary education at the U.S. Department of Education ... Tufts named Lawrence S. Bacow as president, effective in August. Bacow has been chancellor and professor of environmental studies at MIT ... James P. Gallagher, president at Philadelphia, was chosen as president at Duquesne ... George Kidd announced plans to retire as president at Tiffin, effective June 2002 ... New York University elevated John E. Sexton to president, effective May 2002. Sexton currently serves as dean of the school of law ... Alma selected Saundra J. Tracy as president, effective August 1. Most recently, Tracy has been vice-president for academic affairs and dean of the college at Mount Union ... Walter V. Wendler was named as chancellor at Southern Illinois. Wendler has been vice-chancellor for planning and system integration at Texas A&M.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Hank Ford was hired as athletics director at Savannah State, succeeding interim athletics director Charles Elmore. Ford spent four years as athletics director at Howard before the school chose not to renew his contract in July 2000 ... Albion selected Peter Hart as director of athletics, effective July 1. Most recently, Hart has worked as senior associate athletics director at Hartford ... Edward J. Manetta Jr. resigned as associate vice-president and athletics director at St. John's (New York), effective July 2001. Manetta has guided the athletics program since September 1995 ... South Florida elevated Lee Roy Selmon to athletics director to succeed Paul Griffin, who resigned. Selmon has served as associate athletics director since 1993 ... Howard appointed Sondra Norrell-Thomas as athletics director, replacing Hank Ford. Norrell-Thomas, who has been working as interim athletics director since July 1, 2000, was executive assistant to the vice-president for student affairs and senior woman administrator ... Jim Wacker stepped down as athletics director at Southwest Texas State to assume duties as special assistant to the president for athletics projects at the school. Wacker has served as athletics director since 1998.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS
OF ATHLETICS

Elon elevated Clay Hassard to senior associate director of athletics. Hassard most recently has been associate director of athletics for compliance and campus relations. The school also announced that Kyle Willis, associate director of athletics for business operations, will assume additional duties supervising sports information, marketing and promotions ... Penn State's L. Budd Thalman announced plans to retire as associate athletics director for communications, effective July 31. Thalman has been on the athletics staff since 1986.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Boston College chose Lisa Cascio as assistant athletics director for media relations ... Ryan Snider assumed duties as assistant director of athletics for promotions and marketing at Dartmouth.

COACHES

Baseball -- Dan Olear resigned as head coach at St. Peter's ... Quinnipiac head coach Joe Mattei announced his retirement after five seasons ... Robert Riggs resigned as head coach at LeTourneau to become head coach at East Texas Baptist University ... Rochester hired Joseph Reina as head coach and assistant director of intramurals to replace Robert Hartz and interim head coach David Palese. Since 1999, Reina has served as an assistant at College of New Jersey.

Men's basketball -- Western State hired Steve Phillips as head coach to replace Kyle Green. For the past 16 years, Phillips has guided the program at Central High School in Grand Junction, Colorado ... Michael Hunt was named as head coach at Towson. Hunt, an assistant coach at Georgia for the last four years, succeeds Mike Jaskulski ... Troy Larson resigned as head coach at Morningside to replace Matt Margenthaler as an assistant at South Dakota State. Larson has been head coach at Morningside since March ... Worcester Polytechnic's Ken Kaufman resigned after 26 seasons as head coach. Kaufman will continue as assistant to the athletics director, physical education instructor, coordinator of summer sports camps and director of basketball and soccer camps ... Denison released head coach Bill Lee after five seasons.

Men's basketball assistants -- Bucknell hired Sean McAloon as an assistant coach. McAloon, who replaces Carl Danzig, has spent three seasons as an assistant at Randolph Macon ... Pat Kelsey was chosen as coordinator of basketball operations at Wake Forest ... Alvin "Pooh" Williamson, Kwanza Johnson and Steve Cooper were selected as assistant coaches at Tulsa ... Akron appointed Lannis Timmons as an assistant, effective June 1. Since 1995, Timmons, who replaces Pat Knight, has been a high-school head coach in Cincinnati ... Oronde Taliaferro was hired as an assistant coach at Kent State. For the past five years, Taliaferro has been head varsity boys' basketball coach at Detroit Central High School ... North Carolina State chose Larry Hunter as an assistant coach. Hunter was head coach at Ohio before being released in March ... Marcus Kahn was appointed as an assistant at Shepherd. Kahn most recently has been an assistant coach at Albright ... Rick Sinclair was named as an assistant coach at Husson ... Ohio appointed Gary Manchel and Kevin Kuwik as assistants ... Frank Haith was added as an assistant coach at Texas ... Xavier selected Bill Comar as director of men's basketball operations ... Billy McCaffrey was chosen as an assistant coach at St. Bonaventure ... Eddie Benton, Steve Curran and Todd Kalsey were added as assistants at Robert Morris. Women's basketball -- Mississippi Valley State released Jessie Harris as head women's basketball and volleyball coach ... Joe Mathews was hired as head coach at Towson. For the past four years, Mathews has served as an assistant at Virginia Tech and succeeds Ellen Fitzkee ... Tammy Smith was awarded responsibilities as head coach at Lafayette ... Cal State Bakersfield head coach Greg Bruce resigned. Bruce has guided the program since March 2000 ... Sewanee (University of the South) elevated Karen Booker to head coach, succeeding Richard Barron, who became head coach at Princeton. Booker was an assistant with the program last season ... LeTourneau hired Jamy Bechler as head coach. Most recently, Bechler has been an assistant men's coach at Anderson University (North Dakota) ... Indiana/Purdue-Fort Wayne appointed Bruce Patterson as head coach ... Rebecca Morrisey was selected as head coach at Rockhurst. Morrisey has been vice principal at Leavenworth (Kansas) High School.

Women's basketball assistants -- Indiana State appointed Stacey Brewer, Megan Lanham and Kara Wile as assistant coaches ... Linsay Gottlieb was awarded responsibilities as an assistant coach at New Hampshire ... Valparaiso named Caroline McCombs as women's basketball recruiting coordinator, Megan Shaff as graduate assistant and Carie Wickham as women's basketball administrative assistant ... Billie Wilson was elevated to associate head coach at Coppin State after working as an assistant with the program for three years. Wilson also has been head softball coach, but will relinquish those duties ... Stetson appointed Bridgette Gordon as an assistant coach. Most recently, Gordon has played basketball in Turkey and worked as a broadcaster with the Fox Sports South, covering Tennessee women's basketball ... Amanda Butler and Stephanie McCormick were added as assistants at Charlotte. Butler has spent the past four years as an associate head coach at Austin Peay, and McCormick has served one season as an assistant and the past three seasons as associate head coach at North Carolina-Wilmington ... Emporia State's Natasha Taylor resigned as an assistant coach ... Rick Hall and Keila Whittington were chosen as assistant coaches at Penn State ... Delaware selected Tyrone Perry as an assistant coach. For the past two seasons, Perry has worked as a part-time assistant men's basketball coach at the school ... John Ishee, an assistant at Saint Louis, resigned after one season to become head coach at Odessa (Texas) College ... Phil Stern was selected as an assistant coach at Arizona State ... Boise State tabbed Sean Page as an assistant coach ... Brandi Poole was hired as an assistant coach at Sewanee (University of the South). Last season, Poole was an assistant at West Virginia ... Carleton awarded Heidi Luehmann with additional duties as an assistant coach. Luehmann also is head volleyball coach.

Men's and women's cross country -- Rick Wagenaar resigned as head cross country and track and field coach at Richmond ... Francis Marion's Thomas Whiteley announced his retirement as head men's and women's cross country and track and field coach. Whiteley has guided the programs since 1977 in addition to fulfilling various teaching and administrative posts ... Brian Shanley stepped down as head women's coach at Salve Regina. Shanley will continue as head men's tennis coach and assistant athletics director for compliance.

Field hockey -- Trinity (Connecticut) hired Anne Parmenter as head coach. Parmenter has led the program at Connecticut College for 14 seasons.

Football -- Western State hired Jeff Zenisek as head coach to succeed Carl "Duke" Iverson, who resigned. Zenisek has been an assistant coach at Northern Iowa ... Henderson State appointed Jesse Branch as head coach, succeeding Patrick Nix. Branch recently retired as associate athletics director and assistant football coach at Arkansas.

Football assistants -- Jeff Devanney was selected as defensive line coach at Trinity (Connecticut). For the past three seasons, Devanney has been defensive coordinator at Central Connecticut State ... Albany (New York) named Andrew Christ as outside linebackers coach, Scott James as defensive ends coach, Jim O'Neil as offensive line coach and Dave Dykeman as wide receivers coach. Christ has been an assistant at Swarthmore for three years, and James has worked as defensive line and strength and conditioning coach at Norwich for two years. This spring, O'Neil has worked with the defensive line and linebackers, as well as serving as student assistant strength and conditioning coach at Towson. For the past two seasons, Dykeman has been a student assistant at Holy Cross ... Emporia State named Clay Birmingham as defensive coordinator ... Fairfield added Brandon Csaszar as offensive line coach, Steve Krines as defensive line coach and Joe Milligan as defensive backs coach. The school also announced that defensive line coach Mike Zapolnik moved to offensive line coach ... Otterbein chose David Dunkelberger as defensive coordinator ... Rich Scangarello was named as offensive coordinator and strength and conditioning coach at Carleton. The school also announced Jim Christensen, Tom Bell and Gerald Young will return to the staff. Young will be on sabbatical during the 2001 season.

Men's and women's golf -- Tom Loyd retired as head women's coach at Missouri ... Richard Warren, head women's golf coach at Pacific (Oregon), assumed additional duties as head men's golf coach, succeeding Steve Morrison. Warren, who also has been assistant women's basketball coach for three years, also will become an assistant men's basketball coach next season ... Central Oklahoma named Dax Johnston as head men's coach. Johnston worked with the program last season.

Men's and women's golf assistant -- Steve Jodlowski was chosen as a student assistant coach at Central Oklahoma.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Trinity (Connecticut) named Kate Busniuk as head women's coach. Busniuk spent last season as co-head coach of the City of West Hartford High Schools team ... Mark Jago was chosen as head coach at Nichols. Jago, who has been an assistant coach for two seasons, most recently was interim head coach at the school ... Milwaukee School of Engineering hired Mark Ostapina as head coach to replace Pat Hessenauer. Since 1995, Ostapina has guided the program at New England ... Blaise MacDonald was added as head coach at Massachusetts-Lowell ... Plymouth State added Chris Hudon as head men's coach. Hudon, who succeeds Mike Bonelli, has been head coach at Dracut (Massachusetts) High School for two seasons ... Bob Lavin stepped down after three seasons as head men's coach at Salve Regina ... Lake Forest hired Susan Bellizzi as head women's coach to succeed T.R. Bell. Bell will continue as head women's soccer coach. Last season, Bellizzi was an assistant at Middlebury.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Western New England head men's coach Tim O'Meara resigned ... Courtney Lockhart was elevated to head women's coach at Keene. Lockhart has been an assistant for the past year.

Men's soccer -- Bernard Baruch head coach Petar Mrkic resigned ... Husson named Scott Warman as head coach.

Women's soccer -- Brandon Padgett was chosen as head women's soccer/head men's and women's tennis coach at Shenandoah. Padgett, who replaces Lenny Paoletti, was a member of the West Virginia athletics department ... Jim Nestor was awarded responsibilities as head women's soccer coach and women's lacrosse coach at Salisbury State ... Rudy Medina was named as head coach at CCNY ... Plymouth State chose Keith Scarlett as head coach to replace Rebecca Lisack, who became an assistant at South Carolina. For the past year, Scarlett has served as an assistant women's coach at Ferrum.

Women's soccer assistant -- Akron selected Laura Ray as an assistant coach. Ray has worked as an academic advising intern at Utah.

Softball -- Bradley announced the resignation of head coach Stefanie McAllister. McAllister guided the program for six seasons ... Shelly Bayer resigned as head coach at South Dakota State after five seasons ... Tim Whitman was appointed as head coach at Louisiana College ... Bernita Alexander was released as head softball coach and assistant women's basketball coach at Mississippi Valley State ... Luther hired Renae Rost as head coach. Rost has been an assistant volleyball and softball coach at Gustavus Adolphus ... Mary Jo Vrba assumed duties as head coach at Loras.

Softball assistant -- Carleton's Gerald Young assumed additional responsibilities as an assistant. Young also served as associate athletics director and assistant football coach.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Sean Tedesco was hired as head men's and women's swimming and diving coach at Merchant Marine. Tedesco has served as head assistant men's and women's coach at Villanova for three years ... Lance Huber was chosen as head men's and women's swimming and diving coach and aquatics director at Luther. Huber has served as head coach at Cumberland for two years ... Judy Wolfe was hired as head coach and aquatics director at Bryn Mawr. Formerly, Wolfe fulfilled duties as head men's and women's swimming and diving and aquatics director at Union (New York).

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistant -- Villanova appointed Tiffany Sawin as assistant men's and women's coach.

Men's and women's tennis -- Texas A&M-Corpus Christi named Steve Denton as head men's coach. Denton, who replaces Steve Moore, has been director of the HEB Tennis Center for the last seven years ... David Gartrelle was selected as head men's and women's coach at CCNY ... Ryan Cavanagh was chosen as head men's coach at Dowling, succeeding Cheryl Novins, who resigned ... Salve Regina head women's coach Ed Habershaw took a leave of absence to pursue graduate studies. Habershaw, who has led the team since 1992, will continue as sports information director at the school.

Men's and women's track and field assistant -- Emporia State's Rick Ginter resigned as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Coppin State awarded head coaching duties to China Jude to replace Stephanie Ready, who resigned but will continue as assistant men's basketball coach at the school. Jude was head coach at North Carolina-Wilmington for two years ... Peter Nguyen was named as head men's and women's coach at New Jersey City.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Virginia added Matt Ginipro as an assistant coach. Last season, Ginipro was an assistant at Mississippi ... Jason Smith was added as an assistant women's coach at Ferris State. Smith, who replaces Dominic Yoder, has been an assistant at Iowa Western Community College ... Denver appointed Ron Arenz as an assistant women's coach.

STAFF

Athletic trainers -- Greensboro promoted assistant athletic trainer Curt Mauger to head athletic trainer ... Bryn Mawr hired Lisa Treadway-Kurtz as athletic trainer. From 1995 to 2001, Treadway-Kurtz served as head athletic trainer at Rider ... Mike Gilboe was named as head athletic trainer at Lake Forest.

Assistant athletic trainer -- Heather Ward was chosen as an assistant athletic trainer at Colgate.

Assistant business manager -- Elon elevated part-time assistant business manager and ticket manager Kelly Lloyd to full-time status.

Communications assistant -- Syracuse named Pete Moore as associate director of athletics communications.

Equipment manager -- Eric Smith was promoted to head athletics equipment manager at Tulsa.

Life Skills -- Tulsa added Schnea Bates as Life Skills and community service coordinator.

Marketing -- Cam Pepper was appointed as director of athletics marketing at Tulsa.

Recreation -- Dwight Burgess, head men's soccer coach for the past year at Capital, was awarded additional responsibilities as director of intramurals and recreation and assistant facilities director.

Sports information assistants -- Missouri-Kansas City hired Tyson Goos as assistant sports information director. For the past five years, Goos has been a student assistant and full-time assistant in the Pittsburg State sports information office ... Chris Rash was promoted to full-time assistant director of sports information at Elon. Rash has been filling the position on a part-time basis.

Strength and conditioning -- Rod Deaton, part-time head strength and conditioning coach at Elon, was promoted to full-time ... Stephen F. Austin hired Dan Eason as head strength and conditioning coach and director of the Jimmy W. Murphy Wellness Center. For the past year, Eason, who replaces Britt Patton, has been assistant strength and conditioning coach at Central Florida ... Jason Veltkamp was elevated to director of strength and conditioning at Utah. Veltkamp, who has been with the staff since 1999, was most recently filling the director duties on an interim basis.

Strength and conditioning assistants -- Bernardo Amerson was tabbed as assistant strength and conditioning coach at West Virginia ... Utah's Scott Croft was promoted to assistant director of strength and conditioning. Croft has been an assistant at the school since 1999.

CONFERENCES

The Big East Conference hired Gina Bonante as assistant director of sport administration. For the past year, Bonante has worked as the Asa A. Bushnell intern with the Eastern College Athletic Conference.

NATIONAL OFFICE

DeWayne Davis resigned as junior systems administrator at the national office.

AGREEMENTS

Verizon Communications signed a multiyear contract to be the official telecommunications sponsor for USA Track and Field.

CORRECTION

CORRECTIONS

In a Division II milestones item in the May 7 issue of The NCAA News, Coach John Schaly of Ashland College was incorrectly identified as having won the 1999 Division II Baseball Championship. Ashland won a regional and participated in the national championship tournament that year.

One of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients published in the May 7 issue of The NCAA News was listed incorrectly as a Divisions II and III recipient. Tamas Katona, a water polo standout from St. Francis College (New York), is a Division I recipient.

The issue number of the May 21, 2001, issue of The NCAA News was listed incorrectly. The May 21 issue was Vol. 38, No. 11.

REPRIMANDS

The NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Committee has reprimanded former Saint Louis head coach Bob Warming for misconduct during the 2001 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina. Warming used a championship game credential that originally was issued to another coach from a different institution to gain access to the field. As a result of this behavior, the committee has issued a public reprimand.

NOTABLES

Stanford sophomore tennis player Laura Granville was chosen as a Honda Award winner as the top collegiate woman athlete in her sport for 2000-01. Granville, who helped Stanford to a 30-0 season and the 2001 Division I women's tennis team title, established an NCAA record for consecutive victories with 58.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced the following national award winners for NCAA Division I men's tennis: Ted A. Farnsworth/ITA National Senior Player of the Year -- Peter Luczak, Fresno State; ITA National Player to Watch -- Matias Boeker, Georgia; ITA National Assistant Coach of the Year -- Dave Hagymas, Duke; ITA/Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Award -- Marco Baron, Mississippi State; and the John Van Nostrand Memorial Award -- Peter Luczak, Fresno State. The organization announced the following as inductees into the ITA Collegiate Men's Tennis Hall of Fame: Players -- Ramsey Earnhart, Southern California; Brad Gilbert, Pepperdine; Fred McNair, North Carolina; Brian Teacher, UCLA; Watson M. Washburn, Harvard. Coaches -- Mercer Beasley, Tulane and Princeton; Tom Chivington, Foothill (Junior) College (California); and Dave Snyder, Arizona and Texas.

Manuel Diaz, head men's coach at Georgia, was named the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association national coach of the year. Diaz, who also captured the award in 1995, led the program to the Division I men's tennis title and the Southeastern Conference championship.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced the following national award winners for NCAA Division I women's tennis: ITA National Senior Player of the Year -- Michelle Dasso, Notre Dame; ITA National Rookie of the Year -- Ansley Cargill, Duke; ITA National Player to Watch -- Nataly Cahana, Old Dominion; ITA Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award -- Jodi Richardson, BYU; ITA National Assistant Coach of the Year -- Debbie Beck, Georgia, and Jill Hultquist, Washington.

Mike and Sonia Hahn-Patrick were named as Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association national coaches of the year. The husband and wife team, who also were chosen as Southeastern Conference coaches of the year, are in their fourth year as co-head coaches at Tennessee.

DEATHS

Arthur Gulden, head cross country and track coach at Bucknell, died May 19 from complications related to cancer. Gulden, 58, had guided the programs for 31 years.

Former New Jersey City coach John Stallworth died May 18. Stallworth, 70, served as an assistant men's basketball coach from 1982 to 2000.

Former Ohio State athletics director Ed Weaver died May 23. He was 90. Weaver served the university for more than 30 years, including working as athletics director from 1970 to 1977.
