Amaker chosen as Michigan head coach

Michigan has hired Tommy Amaker as head

men's basketball coach. Amaker replaces Brian Ellerbe.

For the past four seasons, Amaker has guided Seton Hall to a 68-55 mark. He came to Seton Hall after serving as an assistant at Duke for nine years.

As a student-athlete, Amaker was a four-year basketball starter at Duke, earning all-America honors in 1987. The Duke record-holder for single-game, season and career assists was team captain as a senior and won the Henry Iba Corinthian award in 1987 as the nation's top defensive player. In addition, Amaker competed internationally, helping the United States win a gold medal at the 1986 World Championships.

Amaker earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Duke in 1987.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

L. Jay Oliva announced retirement plans as president at New York University, effective in the summer of 2002 ... Columbia President George Rupp resigned, effective in the summer of 2002 ... Missouri Western State appointed James Scanlon as president. Scanlon has been provost and professor of English at Youngstown State ... Thomas J. Trebon was selected as president at Carroll (Montana), effective August 1, to replace Matthew J. Quinn, who resigned, and interim president Stephen Rowan. Trebon has been vice-president for academic affairs and dean of the college at Saint Norbert for six years ... William F. Walker, provost at Auburn, assumed responsibilities as interim president at the school ... Southern Oregon named Elizabeth Zinser as president. Zinser most recently has served as chancellor at Kentucky ... Jack P. Calareso, president at Briar Cliff, was appointed as president at Ohio Dominican College ... Harvard selected Lawrence H. Summers as president, effective July 1. Summers formerly was U.S. Secretary of the Treasury and a professor of political economy at the school ... Alaska Anchorage Provost Daniel M. Johnson was appointed as president at Toledo, effective July 1.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Bill Merris announced his retirement as athletics director at Illinois College, effective July 1. Merris coached the men's basketball team from 1958 to 1997 and has served as athletics director since 1998. The school named Gale F. Vaughn as Merris' successor. Vaughn has been with the school since 1979 and has been director of enrollment management since 1989 ... Jacksonville's Hugh Durham was named as director of athletics. Durham, who also serves as head men's basketball coach, has been fulfilling athletics director duties on an interim basis since last March ... Joseph C. Smith was elevated to athletics director at Eastern Kentucky, succeeding Jeffrey P. Long. Smith, who has been associate athletics director for internal operations since 1999, most recently fulfilled the athletics director post on an interim basis ... Larry R. Martin was hired as athletics director at Eastern Mennonite, replacing Robert D. Roeschley, who will continue as head baseball coach. Since 1995, Martin has served as associate director of athletics for external affairs at Towson.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE

Mississippi Valley State appointed Jimmy F. Barnes, a full professor in the social science department, as faculty athletics representative.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Brian Hutchinson was elevated to associate director of athletics at Morehead State. For the past 18 months, Hutchinson has worked as director of development and marketing ... Craig Keilitz was named as associate athletics director for marketing and promotions at Wake Forest, succeeding Joel Nielsen. Keilitz was associate athletics director for compliance and internal operations at the school ... Jacksonville elevated Mike Bazemore to associate athletics director for administration and finance. Since 1993, Bazemore has served as assistant athletics director for administration and finance.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Ken Trahan was selected as assistant athletics director for marketing/promotions and broadcasting at New Orleans ... Wake Forest promoted Davis Whitfield to assistant athletics director for operations. For the past two years, Whitfield has been director of operations ... Donna Kirk was elevated to assistant athletics director for compliance at Jacksonville. Kirk worked as ticket manager at the school from 1997 to 2000 and most recently has been leading the compliance department ... Melissa Stuckey was promoted to assistant athletics director for operations and facilities at Florida.

COACHES

Baseball assistant -- New York Tech appointed Ryan Gorecki as a graduate assistant coach.

Men's basketball -- Wisconsin released Brad Soderberg as interim head coach. Soderberg was an assistant with the program and took over for Dick Bennett, who retired November 30 ... Niagara awarded head coach Joe Mihalich a contract extension through the 2006-07 season ... Kevin Lehman will not return as head coach at Nebraska-Omaha. Lehman closes a six-year tenure with the program ... Kevin Bannon was released after four years as head coach at Rutgers ... Saint Mary's (California) head coach David Bollwinkel resigned ... Tommy Green, head coach at Southern, was reassigned to other duties at the school ... Tennessee's Jerry Green resigned as head coach. Green has led the program since 1997. The school appointed assistant coach Chris Ferguson as interim head coach ... Mike Jaskulski was released as head coach at Towson after four years ... Idaho named Leonard Perry as head coach ... Jeff Ruland, head coach at Iona, signed an eight-year contract extension through the 2008-09 season ... Indiana elevated interim coach Mike Davis to head coach. Davis, who has been interim head coach since September 12, replaces Bob Knight ... Rick Pitino was hired as head coach at Louisville, succeeding Denny Crum, who retired. In January, Pitino, who formerly was head coach at Kentucky, resigned after three and a half seasons as head coach and president of the NBA's Boston Celtics ... Texas Southern released head coach Robert Moreland after 26 seasons. Moreland is the school's winningest coach with a 399-352 record ... Georgia Tech agreed to terms with head coach Paul Hewitt on a contract extension through 2004-05 ... Steve Lappas resigned as head coach at Villanova to become head coach at Massachusetts. Lappas succeeds James "Bruiser" Flint ... Texas Tech hired Bob Knight as head coach. Knight succeeds James Dickey ... Jim Baron was hired as head coach at Rhode Island. Baron, who replaces Jerry DeGregorio, has been head coach at St. Bonaventure since 1991 ... Canisius head coach Mike MacDonald agreed to a four-year contract extension, through the 2005-06 season ... Kurt Kanaskie, head coach at Drake, agreed to terms on a multiyear contract extension, through the 2005-06 season ... Hofstra hired Tom Pecora as head coach ... Dennie Bridges retired as head coach at Illinois Wesleyan, but

will retain responsibilities as athletics director, a position he has held since 1981. Bridges closes a 36-season tenure as head coach with a career mark of 667-319 ... Providence head coach Tim Welsh agreed to a seven-year contract extension. Welsh has guided the program for three years ... Steve Alford, head coach at Iowa, agreed to a five-year contract extension through 2009. Alford has been head coach at the school since 1999 ... Wisconsin hired Bo Ryan as head coach. For the past two years, Ryan has served as head coach at Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He replaces Brad Soderberg.

Women's basketball -- Carson-Newman selected Dean Walsh as head coach ... Eliane Kebbe stepped down as head coach at Belmont Abbey. Kebbe, who closes her tenure with a 315-110 record, will continue as athletics director at the school ... Julie Felderhoff resigned as head women's basketball and track coach at Dallas. Felderhoff guided the basketball team for three seasons and the track squad for one ... McNeese State head coach Bridget Martin resigned after seven seasons to assume responsibilities as the school's compliance director and senior woman administrator ... Mike Carey was hired as head coach at West Virginia. For the past 13 seasons, Carey has served as head men's basketball coach at Salem-Teikyo ... Dominican (New York) chose John Burke as head coach ... Stonehill's Kelly Hart resigned as head coach ... Royce Chadwick was appointed as head coach at Marshall to succeed Juliene Simpson. Chadwick has led the Stephen F. Austin program since 1994.

Women's basketball assistant -- Penn State assistant coach Michael Peck resigned to become an assistant coach with the WNBA team in Orlando.

Football -- Central Connecticut State added Paul Schudel as head coach. Schudel, who has been offensive line coach at Virginia for the past four seasons, replaces Sal Cintorino, who resigned to become senior associate athletics director at the school ... Carl "Duke" Iverson was hired as head coach at Western Oregon, succeeding Blaine Bennett, who became quarterbacks coach at Purdue. Iverson, who formerly led the program from 1985 to 1987, has spent the past 12 seasons as head coach at Western State College.

Football assistants -- Cincinnati added A.J. Christoff as defensive coordinator, Andy Hendel as linebackers coach, O'Neill Gilbert as defensive line coach and Charles McMillian as secondary coach ... Shane Montgomery was chosen as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Miami (Ohio) ... Nicholls State appointed Jeff Richards as offensive coordinator ... Kirby Smart was elevated to defensive coordinator at Valdosta State. The school also tabbed Levorn Harbin as defensive line coach and Danny O'Rourke as secondary coach ... Hofstra named Greg Gigantino as defensive coordinator ... Jimmy Burrow was awarded duties as a graduate assistant coach at Nebraska ... Cornell chose Jim Pletcher as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, Gerard Wilcher as defensive secondary coach, John Strollo as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, Scott Walker as running backs coach and Adam Schwartz as offensive assistant coach ... Charlie Roman resigned after two seasons as defensive secondary coach at Delaware, and Brian Ginn, a graduate assistant with the program during the 2000 season, was named as receivers coach. The school announced that Paul Williams, receivers coach for the past two seasons, will move to defensive secondary coach ... New Mexico State selected Richard Rodgers as defensive secondary coach ... John Butler assumed responsibilities as secondary coach and Kent Laster became running backs coach at Southwest Texas ... Randolph-Macon hired Jay Dee Flynn as receivers coach and recruiter. Flynn currently is a senior at Wabash, where he was a volunteer assistant receivers coach during the 2000 season ... Bob Morris was awarded additional responsibilities as defensive coordinator at Akron. Morris, who has served as pass defense coordinator for the past three seasons, replaces Joe Palmisano ... McNeese State hired Gerald Broussard as offensive line coach ... Micah Lazenby was chosen as receivers coach and Bryant Thomas was appointed cornerbacks coach at Idaho State ... California (Pennsylvania) hired Kevin Russell as quarterbacks and receivers coach ... Albany (New York) named Peter Rossomando as offensive line coach. Rossomando spent last year as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Cortland State ... New Jersey City added Bob Merritt as defensive coordinator and defensive line coach, Jamil Jackson as inside linebackers coach, Joe Hines as outside linebackers coach, Keith Price as secondary coach, Reggie Beard as offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach, Willie Breauxsaus as running backs coach, Frank Marino as offensive line coach, John Conroy as offensive line coach, Shawn McHale as quarterbacks coach and Tom Whitely as special teams coach.

Men's and women's golf -- Rice chose Clay Homan as head men's coach.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- John Markell signed a two-year contract extension as head men's coach at Ohio State ... Dean Talafous, head men's coach at Alaska Anchorage, has been reassigned ... Massachusetts-Lowell head men's coach Tim Whitehead resigned.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistant -- Paul Jones was chosen as an assistant men's coach at New York Tech.

Men's soccer -- Illinois Wesleyan appointed David Barrett as head men's and women's coach. Barrett has been an assistant men's soccer coach at Yale since 1997 ... Augustana (Illinois) added Scott Mejia as head men's and women's soccer coach ... Stephen Rammel assumed duties as head coach at Saint Mary's (California). For the past three years, Rammel has been an assistant coach at UCLA ... Connecticut head coach Ray Reid agreed to a four-year contract extension through 2004. In four years as head coach, Reid has built a 67-19-4 mark and led the team to the 2000 Division I championship ... Ed Goodhines resigned as head coach at Southampton.

Women's soccer -- Brad Hauter was selected as head coach at Rose-Hulman, effective April 16.

Women's soccer assistants -- Scott Bowers accepted duties as an assistant coach at LSU ... Texas Tech tabbed Chris Cogan as an assistant coach ... UC Irvine added Jamie Surprenant as an assistant coach. During the 2000 season, Surprenant was the lead assistant at Boise State.

Softball -- Missouri Western's Jill Heckman resigned as head coach, effective June 30.

Men's and women's swimming -- Carthage named Greg Earhart as director of aquatics and head men's swimming coach.

Men's and women's tennis -- Seabury Stanton assumed responsibilities as head men's and women's coach at New Hampshire.

Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Patrick Brown was named as assistant men's and women's coach at New York Tech to replace Berris Long, who will continue with the program as a volunteer coach. The school also announced that Michael Gibson resigned as an assistant men's and women's coach ... Stefani Papageorge Webb, head women's soccer coach at Dallas, assumed additional duties as interim track coach, succeeding Julie Felderhoff, who resigned.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Ray MacLean resigned as head men's and women's coach at Southampton ... Adams State hired Jody Paperno as head coach. Most recently, Paperno has worked as first assistant at Golden West Junior College.

Men's and women's volleyball assistant -- Scott Carter was selected as an assistant coach at Kent State. Carter has served as head men's and women's coach at Sacred Heart for six years.

STAFF

Athletic trainers -- Buffalo promoted Sue Rocque to head athletic trainer. Rocque has been been an assistant athletic trainer at the school since 1988 and replaces Mike Rielly, who retired in December ... Paul Culina was elevated to athletic trainer at Maine.

Marketing and promotions -- Wake Forest promoted Dan Hauser to director of marketing and promotions. Most recently, Hauser has been an assistant director in the marketing and promotions department.

Strength and conditioning -- Bob Miller was added as strength and conditioning coach at Dartmouth.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Nichole Manning resigned as an assistant director of championships at the national office.

CORRECTIONS

The name of R. Kevin LaGree, president of Simpson College, was misspelled in the March 26 issue of The NCAA News. LaGree is a new member of the Division III Presidents Council.

A University of Wisconsin, La Crosse, runner was misidentified in a caption that appeared in the March 26 issue of The NCAA News. Kevin Yarbrough anchored the Eagles' winning 1,600-meter relay team.

A statement in the Division I notes section of the March 26 issue of The NCAA News regarding baseball scholarships being reduced at Southeastern Louisiana University due to the school restarting football was incorrect. The university actually is implementing a program in which rosters will be managed more efficiently. The number of scholarships for baseball will remain the same.
