Claremont-M-S names Sutton to top post

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps has appointed Michael Sutton as athletics director. Sutton has been serving in an interim capacity since the fall of 2000.

For the past 21 years, Sutton has guided the men's swimming team at the school, and he has been the school's head men's water polo coach for 19 years. During his tenure, he has earned 18 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference swimming titles and 15 SCIAC water polo championships. Sutton's squads also have captured three Western Water Polo Association titles.

Sutton has been a member of the NCAA swimming and water polo rules and championships committees. Since 1995, he has served as chair of the SCIAC Swim Coaches Committee, and since 1986, he has fulfilled responsibilities as a member of the Western Water Polo Association's executive committee.

Sutton earned a bachelor's degree in history from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and a master's degree in sports administration from the United States Sports Academy.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Creighton announced the selection of John P. Schlegel as president. Schlegel succeeds Michael G. Morrison, who stepped down June 30, 2000 ... Southwest State appointed David C. Danahar as president. Danahar has served as provost and vice-president for academic affairs at Loyola University in New Orleans ... Kenneth R. Garren was named as president at Lynchburg, effective in August. Garren has been vice-president and dean of the college at Roanoke ... Evansville selected Stephen G. Jennings as president, effective June 1. Jennings most recently has been president of Oklahoma City University ... District of Columbia President Julius F. Nimmons announced his resignation, effective June 30 ... Central Arkansas' Winfred L. Thompson announced retirement plans, effective July 2002 ... Ann M. Amore was hired as president at Rosemont, succeeding the retiring Margaret M. Healy, effective July 1, 2001. Amore has been vice-president of college relations at St. Francis (New York).

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Robert F. Ducatte announced plans to retire as athletics director at Rensselaer Polytechnic, a position he has held since 1971. Ducatte joined the school in 1967 as head baseball coach and assistant football coach, and he also has served as head golf and head football coach throughout his tenure with the school ... Morningside's Beth Sibenaller resigned after three years as athletics director, but she will continue as associate athletics director at the school. Jerry Schmutte, head men's basketball coach for 11 seasons, will replace Sibenaller as athletics director and retire as head coach.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR

Charlotte Hunt was appointed as senior woman administrator and athletics compliance coordinator at Texas-Pan American. For the past year, Hunt has been compliance coordinator at Northwestern.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS
OF ATHLETICS

Tulane's Ken Berthelot resigned as assistant athletics director for broadcast properties ... Melody Reifel was selected as assistant athletics director for compliance at Eastern Michigan. Reifel has spent the past four years as coordinator of athletics rules compliance at the school ... Capital chose Jim Bickel as assistant athletics director, assistant head football coach and defensive coordinator. For the past two years, Bickel has worked as football defensive coordinator, strength and conditioning coach, intramural sports director and physical education instructor at Otterbein.

COACHES

Men's basketball -- James "Bruiser" Flint resigned as head coach at Massachusetts. Flint served as an assistant coach with the program for seven seasons before assuming head coaching duties in 1996 ... Joey Stiebing was released as head coach at New Orleans ... North Texas released head coach Vic Trilli after four seasons ... Eddie Fogler resigned as head coach at South Carolina. Fogler was hired as head coach in 1993 ... Larry Hunter was released as head coach at Ohio. Hunter guided the program for 12 years and closes his tenure with a 204-148 record ... Cal Poly promoted Kevin Bromley to head coach, replacing Jeff Schneider. Bromley has been associate head coach for five seasons and has spent the past three months as interim head coach ... Brian Ellerbe was released after four seasons as head coach at Michigan ... Northeastern released Rudy Keeling as head coach. Keeling has guided the program for five years ... Morgan State will not renew the contract of head coach Chris Fuller ... James Dickey was released after 10 seasons as head coach at Texas Tech ... La Salle released head coach William Morris. Morris has been head coach for 15 years ... Jeff Capel resigned as head coach at Old Dominion. In seven years, Capel guided the program to a 122-98 record and Colonial Athletic Association championships in 1995 and 1997 ... Florida Southern chose Tony Longa as head coach ... Jerome Jenkins, head coach at Sacramento State, was awarded a contract extension ... Scranton appointed Carl G. Danzig as head coach ... Troy Larson was elevated to head coach at Morningside. Larson, an assistant coach for three years and associate head coach this past season, succeeds Jerry Schmutte.

Women's basketball -- Towson will not renew the contract of head coach Ellen Fitzkee. Fitzkee has led the program for 13 years ... East Stroudsburg will not renew the contract of head coach Rose Haller. The school selected assistant Michelle Simons as interim head coach ... Julie Felderhoff resigned as head women's basketball and track coach coach at Dallas ... Eastern Mennonite's Doug Hochstetler resigned as head coach ... Sandra Rushing resigned as head coach at Texas-El Paso ... Wright State head coach Lisa Fitch resigned ... John Sutherland resigned after five seasons as head coach at New Mexico State ... Ed Baldwin resigned as head coach at Charlotte ... Mercyhurst head coach Jim Webb resigned after 11 seasons with the program, including the last seven as head coach.

Football -- Jerry Boyes resigned as head coach at Buffalo State to focus on responsibilities as athletics director. Boyes led the football squad for 15 years and has been athletics director since July 1999 ... Mike Dunbar resigned as head coach at Northern Iowa.

Football assistants -- California hired LeCharls McDaniel as special teams coach, succeeding Al Simmons. McDaniel has been special teams coach for the NFL's Washington Redskins for the past three seasons ... Dan Quinn resigned as defensive coordinator at Hofstra to become defensive line coach for the NFL's San Francisco 49ers ... Tufts named John Walsh as assistant coach ... Russ Ehrenfeld and George McDonald were hired as assistants at Bucknell. Ehrenfeld has been offensive line coach at Alabama State, and McDonald served as a graduate assistant coach at Ball State during the 2000 season ... Northwestern selected Mike Dunbar as special teams, tight ends and fullbacks coach. The school also announced offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson will assume duties as assistant head coach ... Carroll McCray and Joel Williams resigned as assistants at Samford ... Vanderbilt named Rahim Batten as assistant defensive coach and recruiting coordinator ... Rochester hired Lewis J. Acquarulo as defensive coordinator to succeed Peter Gallagher. For the past two seasons, Acquarulo has been an assistant at Pennsylvania ... Cincinnati added Stacy Searels as offensive line coach ... Blaine Bennett was chosen as quarterbacks coach and Ted Gilmore was appointed as wide receivers coach at Purdue ... Texas Tech selected Dave Brown as secondary coach. Brown replaces Brian Norwood ... Western Michigan hired Joe Woods as cornerbacks coach. For the past three seasons, Woods has been defensive backs coach at Hofstra.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Mike Bonelli resigned as head men's coach at Plymouth State.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Sarah Catlin, an assistant coach at Susquehanna, was elevated to head women's coach, replacing Gina Lucido. Catlin previously was an assistant women's lacrosse coach at Susquehanna during the 1998 and 1999 seasons.

Men's soccer -- Fredonia State added Patrick "P.J." Gondek as head coach. Gondek has served as interim head coach for the past year ... Incarnate Word hired Dennis Currier as head coach. Currier has been head coach at Harris-Stowe State College in Saint Louis for the past eight years ... Duncan McMartin assumed responsibilities as head coach at Austin. McMartin, who succeeds Truett Cates, has spent the past five seasons as assistant men's coach at Humboldt State.

Women's soccer -- Joseph Brady was selected as head coach at Clark, succeeding Thom Skoglund. Brady, who has been head women's soccer coach at Anna Maria for the past five years, also will assume responsibilities as sports information director, replacing Karen Chambers, who accepted other administrative duties ... C.W. Post head coach Gerry Lucey resigned.

Softball -- Betsy Hipple was awarded responsibilities as head coach at Hunter ... Alan Dunefsky was named as head coach at New Paltz State. Dunefsky, who returns after relinquishing head coaching duties two years ago, replaces Richard Thornton, who will assume administrative responsibilities and will continue as head women's basketball coach.

Men's and women's tennis -- Jocelyn Cruz, head women's coach at Hunter, accepted additional duties as head men's coach. Cruz, who has guided the women's team for two seasons, replaces Matt Burcaw.

Men's and women's track and field assistant -- Texas-Pan American hired Lisa Edwards as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Northern Kentucky promoted Carlos Chia to head coach. Chia has served as an assistant with the program since 1994 and replaces Mary Biermann ... Jill Stephens was appointed as head women's coach at Florida Southern.

Men's and women's volleyball assistant -- Amy Bambenek was hired as an assistant at George Washington to replace Jojit Coronel. Bambenek was an assistant at Florida State.

STAFF

Athletics communications -- David Rosenfeld was promoted to director of athletics communications at Loyola (Maryland). Rosenfeld has been assistant director of athletics communications since 1998.

Athletics communications assistant -- Loyola (Maryland) appointed Kristin Parody as interim assistant director of athletics communications. For the past seven months, Parody has been athletics communications assistant at the school.

Media relations assistant -- Pittsburgh selected Burt Lauten as assistant director of athletics media relations.

Sports information assistant -- Wofford named Carrie Fellrath as assistant sports information director. Fellrath has been a sports information assistant at Sacred Heart for the past year.

NOTABLES

Keith Aucoin was named as the American Hockey Coaches Association Men's Ice Hockey College Division Player of the Year. Aucoin is a senior at Norwich and is the school's all-time leading scorer with 114 goals and 122 assists for 236 points.

The following were named as members of the 2001 Hillyard Silver Anniversary All-America basketball team as selected by the National Assocation of Basketball Coaches: Quinn Buckner, John Lucas, Ron Lee, Wally Walker and Phil Sellers. Buckner helped Indiana to a 32-0 mark and an NCAA national championship in 1975-76. Lucas was a consensus all-America at Maryland in 1976, and Lee was a four-time all-Pacific-10 Conference player at Oregon. Walker captured Atlantic Coast Conference tournament most valuable player recognition as a student-athlete at Virginia in 1976, and Sellers competed at Rugters and is the school's all-time leading scorer and rebounder. The NABC also awarded Jud Heathcote the 2001 Golden Anniversary Award for 50 years of service to basketball. Heathcote guided Michigan State to a national championship during the 1978-79 season.

Sophomore Laura Granville and senior Alex Kim of Stanford were selected as Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Players of the Month for February. The ITA also announced Granville and Gabriela Lastra of Stanford, and Johan Brunstrom and Jon Wallmark of Southern Methodist as women's and men's doubles teams, respectively, of the month.

Michael Letzig, a sophomore at New Mexico, and Lorena Ochoa, a freshman at Arizona, were named as Rolex College Golfers of the Month for February. Letzig won individual medalist honors at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate Golf Classic, and Ochoa captured individual medalist honors at the Wildcat Invitational.
