Sonoma State has hired Camille Filardo as senior woman administrator and compliance coordinator.
Most recently, Filardo has worked as an assistant director for the academic support program for student-athletes at Mount San Antonio (California) Junior College. She formerly was an assistant director of athletics for academic services for student-athletes and Life Skills coordinator at Cal Poly.
Filardo is a 1989 graduate of Westmont College, where she earned a degree in psychology and competed on the women's soccer team. She also earned a master of science degree in counseling from Springfield in 1991, and is completing work toward an Ed.D at Southern California.

Malcolm "Mack" Portera, president at Mississippi State, was appointed as chancellor of the University of Alabama system ... Cleveland State named Michael Schwartz as president. Schwartz has been fulfilling the position on an interim basis ... Laura E. Skandera Trombley was chosen as president at Pomona-Pitzer, effective July 1, 2002. Trombley has been vice-president for academic affairs and dean of faculty at Coe ... Theodore L. Fredrickson was named as president at Capital, effective April 1. Fredrickson has been dean of the graduate school at St. Thomas (Minnesota) ... Paul Marion announced plans to resign as president at Franklin, effective in July.
SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATORS
Lisa Melendy, head women's soccer coach at Williams for the past 17 years, was selected as senior woman administrator at the school. Melendy, who also has been an associate athletics director at the school since 1990, will relinquish head coaching duties.

Rhode Island College selected Anne Carty as NCAA faculty athletics representative.

Virginia promoted Jane Miller to senior associate director of athletics for programs. Miller has been associate director of athletics for programs and senior woman administrator since 1995 ... Wesleyan (Connecticut) named Gale Lackey and Kate Mullen as associate athletics directors. Lackey, who was an assistant athletics director, will continue as senior woman administrator and head women's volleyball coach. Mullen, who also was an assistant athletics director, will retain responsibilities as head women's basketball coach ... Rhode Island College's Gail Davis announced plans to retire as associate athletics director for internal affairs, effective December 29 ... Martin L. Josie was selected as an associate director of athletics at Howard. Josie formerly was an intern with Major League Soccer's DC United and also was an administrative assistant to the athletics director at St. Paul's School ... New Haven promoted Susan Zawacki to associate athletics director. Zawacki joined the school as an assistant athletics director in September 2000 ... Texas Tech hired Patrick Britz as associate athletics director of compliance. Britz has been a membership services representative at the NCAA national office.

Wesleyan (Connecticut) chose Richard Whitmore as assistant athletics director. Whitmore has been athletics facilities director and intercollegiate scheduling coordinator at the school ... Michael Chapman was hired as assistant director of athletics for NCAA compliance and student development at New Haven. For the past year and a half, Chapman has been working as an assistant athletics director at the Pratt Institute in New York ... Sam Houston State appointed Chris Thompson as assistant athletics director for academic services and Paul Ridings as assistant athletics director for media services.

Baseball -- Edinboro chose Mitch House as head coach ... Ed Hodge resigned as head coach at Mars Hill to assume duties as a pitching coach with the Billings Mustangs, an affiliate team of Major League Baseball's Cincinnati Reds.
Baseball assistant -- Tim Hamberger was appointed as a volunteer assistant at Delaware for the 2002 season. Hamberger currently is teaching at George Read (Delaware) Middle School and working as an assistant football coach at William Penn (Delaware) High School while completing a master's degree in administration.
Men's basketball -- Bruce Haroldson, head coach at Pacific Lutheran, announced plans to retire after the 2001-02 season ... Mike Young, an assistant coach at Wofford, was elevated to head coach, effective at the end of the season.
Men's basketball assistants -- Lebanon Valley added Chris Rogers and Todd Scipioni as assistant coaches ... Samba Johnson was selected as an assistant coach at Charleston (West Virginia). Johnson most recently has been working as director of basketball operations at Duquesne ... Mike McDonnell and Kevin Brooks were appointed as assistant coaches at Concordia (New York).
Women's basketball -- Sherry Winn was hired as head coach at Charleston (West Virginia). Winn most recently has coached at Southern Colorado.
Women's basketball assistant -- Charleston (West Virginia) added Lynne Fitzgerald as an assistant coach. Fitzgerald has been coaching at Southern Colorado.
Men's and women's cross country -- South Carolina-Spartanburg named Michael Starnes as head men's and women's coach.
Football -- Samford promoted Bill Gray to head coach to replace Pete Hurt, who was released. Gray has been interim head coach ... Jerry Baldwin was released as head coach at Louisiana-Lafayette ... Tim Stowers, head coach at Rhode Island, agreed to terms on a contract extension through the 2006 season ... Brian Smith was appointed as head coach at North Greenville ... Chowan named Lou Saban as head coach ... Eastern Oregon elevated Jim Fenwick to head coach. Fenwick has been offensive coordinator ... Ronnie Jones was hired as head coach at West Texas A&M, replacing Stan McGarvey. Jones, who has been head coach at Ottawa (Kansas) University during the past season, formerly coached at the NFL level as well as at Texas-El Paso, Tulsa and Arizona State ... Southern Methodist hired Phil Bennett to succeed Mike Cavan as head coach. Bennett has been defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Kansas State ... Archie Stalcup was elevated to head coach at La Salle. Stalcup, who succeeds the retired Bill Manlove, has been associate head coach and defensive coordinator.
Football assistants -- Baylor's Greg Meyer resigned as offensive coordinator. The school elevated secondary coach Paul Jette to co-defensive coordinator ... Louisiana-Monroe's Stan Humphries resigned as offensive coordinator ... Puget Sound released Todd Williams as offensive coordinator and Ken Garland as defensive coordinator. Williams, who also has worked as intramural director and as an instructor, has been an assistant with the program since 1990. Garland, who also has been head baseball coach for six seasons, was defensive coordinator for three years.
Men's and women's lacrosse -- Dominican (New York) hired Bob Spaeth as head men's coach. The program is scheduled to begin during the 2002-03 academic year ... Plymouth State added Chuck Little as head men's coach to replace Nate Ostis. Since 1996, Little has guided the program at New Bedford (Massachusetts) High School and also worked as an assistant coach at Roger Williams this past season.
Men's and women's lacrosse assistant -- Chris Galligan was added as an assistant men's coach at Dominican (New York).
Men's and women's rowing -- Evan Rea was hired as head men's and women's coach at Charleston (West Virginia). Rea was a recent graduate of St. Mary's (Maryland), where he was a member of the rowing team and served as head women's coach.
Men's soccer -- Joe Chiavaro retired as head coach at Army ... Bill Easteadt resigned as head coach at C.W. Post. The school chose Danny Longo as Easteadt's successor ... Binghamton will not renew the contract of head coach Hristos Dimitriou. Dimitriou, who has guided the program for nine years, will continue teaching at the school through the spring semester.
Softball -- Nevada hired Michelle Gardner as head coach. The program is scheduled to begin competition in 2003. Gardner has been an assistant coach at Arizona State since 1999.
Softball assistant -- Dean Herman was appointed as a volunteer assistant coach at Edgewood.
Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Ovidio Boteanu was selected as head coach at Plattsburgh State.
Men's and women's tennis -- Milwaukee School of Engineering hired Lawrence Gagnon as head men's and women's coach. Gagnon replaces Mara Lencina.
Men's and women's track and field -- Walter Curry was appointed as acting head coach at Wesleyan (Connecticut). Curry has served as an assistant coach at Boston College for eight years.
Men's and women's volleyball -- Annie S. Hung was chosen as head women's coach at Ramapo ... Jill Simmons was named as head coach at Belmont ... Tom Loney resigned as head women's coach at Oregon Tech. The school promoted assistant coach Amanda Mitzner to head coach.
Men's and women's volleyball assistant -- Rutgers-Newark added Ray Green as an assistant coach.
STAFF
Business manager -- Bobbie Hilliard assumed responsibilities as athletics business manager at Sam Houston State.
Development -- Quinnipiac selected Kevin T. McGinniss as director of athletics development. McGinniss was director of athletics development and executive director of Merchant Marine's Blue and Gray Club from 1997 to 2000, and also formerly was director of athletics, head men's basketball coach, athletics development director and a professor at Lehman.
Media relations -- East Tennessee State named Phil Hess as director of athletics media relations. Hess has been associate sports information director at William and Mary for the past two years.
Strength and conditioning assistant -- Ramapo named Reggie Pantophlet as a member of the strength and conditioning staff.

NATIONAL OFFICE
Marcia Stubbeman was promoted to production manager at the national office. Stubbeman has been an assistant editor with The NCAA News and will retain responsibilities with the publication.
Curtis Frye, head coach at South Carolina, was named as the 2001 Nike Coach of the Year by USA Track and Field.
Bill Berletic, a junior football player at Pace, died in an automobile accident November 21. He was 20. Berletic had competed with the special teams unit for the past two seasons.
Dave Dutton, athletics director at Shenandoah, died of a heart attack October 29. He was 45. Dutton had been athletics director since 1988 in addition to guiding the men's basketball squad from 1988 to 2000.
Former Northern Illinois student-athlete Rick Bilder died November 27. Bilder, 50, was a track and field all-American and five-time qualifier for the NCAA track and field championships. He participated in the United States Olympic trials in 1972, 1976 and 1980. Bilder had most recently been working as a personal trainer and was part owner of a restaurant.
John W. Atherton, the founding president at Pomona-Pitzer, died October 30. Atherton, 85, also was the former dean of humanities and liberal studies at Brockport State and former dean of faculty and professor of English at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (then Claremont Men's College).
J. Osborn Fuller, former president at Fairleigh Dickinson, died October 26. He was 89. Fuller also was a professor emeritus of geological sciences at Ohio State.
Nathan M. Pusey, former president at Harvard and Lawrence, died November 14. Pusey, 94, also served as a professor of the classics at Wesleyan and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
Former Georgia Tech football player Smylie Gebhart died November 29. He was 51. Gebhart, who had been paralyzed from the neck down since 1979, earned all-America honors in 1971 as a defensive end and was inducted into the school's hall of fame in 1980.
C.W. Post football player William Yarocki died November 30. He was 22. Yarocki, a senior defensive tackle, compiled 167 tackles in four seasons. The 2000 Eastern College Athletic Conference player of the year also earned recognition last season as an American Football Coaches Association all-American selection.
John W. Nason, former president at Carleton and Swarthmore, died November 17. Nason was 96.
