Tulane selects Anderson as head soccer coach

 Tulane has hired Betsy Anderson as its head women's soccer coach.

Anderson comes to Tulane after serving as an assistant coach at North Carolina State for the past three years. Before assuming duties at North Carolina State, Anderson spent the 1995 and 1996 seasons as a graduate assistant at American. She accepted a full-time assistant coaching post at the school for the 1997 season.

Anderson was a student-athlete at North Carolina State, competing on the women's soccer squad. She was runner-up for Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Year honors in 1991 and served as team captain as a senior in 1994. After graduation, Anderson went on to play in the United States Women's Interregional Soccer League, helping the Raleigh Wings win league championships in 1998 and 1999. She also won a championship with the Maryland Pride in 1996.

Anderson earned a bachelor of arts degree in communications from North Carolina State in 1995 and a master of arts degree in teaching and elementary education from American in 1997.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Fairmont State chose Daniel J. Bradley as president ... Bobby Fong was appointed as president at Butler. Fong formerly served as dean of faculty at Hamilton.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Southern Colorado selected Joe Folda as interim athletics director. Folda also serves as head men's basketball coach.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR

New Jersey Institute of Technology elevated Sharon Manning Beverly to senior woman administrator/assistant athletics director. Beverly has spent the past two years as head women's basketball coach.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Joe Caiola was promoted to assistant athletics director for business, facilities and event management. Caiola has fulfilled various posts at the school during a three-year tenure, including sports information director, recruitment coordinator and assistant men's basketball coach ... New Paltz State elevated Brian Williams to interim assistant athletics director for compliance. Williams has been head men's and women's swimming and diving coach for seven years ... American International elevated Richard Lenfest Jr. to assistant athletics director for compliance to replace Amy Haworth. For the past four seasons, Lenfest has been serving as assistant women's basketball coach.

COACHES

Baseball -- Aaron Carroll, an assistant coach at Tennessee Tech, was named as interim head coach for the 2001 season. Carroll replaces Mike Maack, who resigned ... Transylvania added Brett Mann as head coach to succeed Erik Hagen. Mann most recently has been an assistant coach at NAIA member Shawnee State University.

Men's basketball -- Stetson's Murray Arnold resigned as head coach. The school selected Derek Waugh as interim coach.

Women's basketball assistant -- Shannon Brown was awarded an assistant coaching post at Texas-Arlington.

Football -- Chris Creighton was appointed as head coach at Wabash ... Georgia hired Mark Richt as head coach. Richt has served as offensive coordinator at Florida State since 1994 and has been quarterbacks coach since 1990 ... John Cooper was released after 13 seasons as head coach at Ohio State ... St. Lawrence added Chris Phelps as head coach ... Tom Shea resigned as head coach at William Penn ... Carroll head coach Merle Masonholder announced plans to retire, effective June 30, 2001. Masonholder has guided the program since 1982 ... Al Groh was hired as head coach at Virginia. Groh, who succeeds the retired George Welsh, spent the past four seasons with the NFL's New York Jets, including serving as head coach last season ... West Georgia's Glenn Spencer resigned as head coach. West Georgia named offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Gary Otten as interim head coach ... New Mexico Highlands promoted assistant Greg Critchett to interim head coach ... Pete Mangurian resigned as head coach at Cornell to accept offensive line coaching responsibilities for the NFL's Atlanta Falcons.

Football assistants -- Donnie Thompson was chosen as defensive line coach at Illinois ... Utah appointed Alex Gerke as offensive tackles and guards coach and Bill Busch as safeties coach. The school also moved defensive coordinator Kyle Whittingham to linebackers coach ... Bob Gregory assumed duties as defensive coordinator at Boise State. The school also elevated defensive graduate assistant Robert Tucker to safeties coach ... Matt Eberflus was awarded responsibilities as defensive coordinator at Missouri ... Georgia's Rodney Garner will continue as defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator. Garner has fulfilled the duties for the past three years ... Georgia Tech chose Lance Thompson as tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator, Glenn Spencer as running backs coach and Peter McCarty as defensive tackles coach. Thompson has been Alabama's defensive line coach for the past two years and Spencer has coached at West Georgia for 11 years, including the last three seasons as head coach. McCarty formerly was an assistant at Illinois. Georgia Tech also announced that running backs coach Eddie Wilson moved to an administrative position ... Chuck Pagano, defensive backs coach at Miami (Florida), was promoted to defensive coordinator ... North Carolina selected Dave Huxtable as outside linebackers and special teams coordinator ... Bob Field was released as defensive coordinator at UCLA. The school appointed Phil Snow as Field's successor ... Phil Elmassian assumed responsibilities as defensive coordinator at West Virginia ... Joe Ferguson resigned as quarterbacks coach at Arkansas ... Wake Forest selected Troy Calhoun as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach; Keith Henry as outside linebackers coach; Dean Hood as defensive coordinator and secondary coach; Steed Lobotzke as centers and offensive guards coach; Ray McCartney as recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach; Billy Mitchell as assistant head coach, running backs and kickers coach; Jeff Mullen as tight ends and offensive tackles coach; and Kevin Sherman as receivers coach ... Brigham Young appointed Mike Borich as offensive coordinator and receivers coach, Paul Tidwell as running backs coach and recruiting coordinator, and Lance Reynolds as assistant head coach and offensive line coach ... Woody Fish was chosen as administrative assistant, football operations at Duke ... Todd Hafner was awarded duties as offensive coordinator and Kenny Wilhite was added as secondary coach at Emporia State ... Ohio named Greg Gregory as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Gregory most recently was an assistant at Richmond.... Scott Lakatos was selected as an assistant at Rutgers ... Carl Dean, Bob Connelly and Tom Quinn were rehired as assistants at San Jose State ... Tennessee released tight ends and assistant offensive line coach Mark Bradley and named Doug Marrone as offensive line coach ... UCLA's Al Borges resigned after five years as offensive coordinator to become offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at California ... Jon Tenuta was chosen as defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at North Carolina ... Ron Antoine assumed responsibilities as wide receivers coach at Ohio. Last season, Antoine was an assistant at Fayetteville State... Southwest Texas added Mike Hudson as defensive coordinator, Blake Miller as offensive coordinator, Chad Glasgow as special teams coordinator and Jim Dawson as assistant head coach ... Citadel selected Les Herrin as defensive coordinator, Jeff Fela as offensive coordinator, Keith Jones as secondary coach and Ahren Self as linebackers coach ... Brian VanGorder was hired as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach and John Eason was hired as wide receivers coach at Georgia. VanGorder spent last season as defensive coordinator at Western Illinois, and Eason most recently was offensive coordinator and associate head coach for the Canadian Football League's Toronto Argonauts ... Montana State named Don Bailey as offensive coordinator ... Don Lindsey assumed duties as defensive coordinator at Mississppi, succeeding Art Kaufman, whose contract was not renewed. Since September, Lindsey has been working as defensive coordinator for the XFL's Birmingham ThunderBolts. The school also announced Thomas Woods was selected as receivers coach, Ruben Mendoza was chosen as strength and conditioning coach and Mike MacIntyre, receivers coach last season, was moved to defensive backs coach. Woods has been receivers coach at Western Carolina for four years and Mendoza has been serving in a similar post at Clemson ... Florida added Ricky Hunley as defensive line coach. Hunley, who replaces Rod Broadway, was an assistant at Missouri from 1994 to 2000.

Men's and women's golf -- Kelley Hester was named as head women's coach at UNLV. The program is scheduled to begin intercollegiate competition in the fall of 2001. Since February 1999, Hester has been an assistant at Georgia.

Men's and women's golf assistant -- Central (Iowa) hired Barry Westerkamp as an assistant men's coach.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Maggie Wright resigned as head women's coach at Philadelphia U.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistant -- Jeff Lewandowski was named as assistant men's coach at Shenandoah. From 1997 to 2000, Lewandowski, who replaces Brendan Chamberlain, was an assistant at Oswego State.

Women's soccer -- Westminster (Missouri) added Kathy Schmidkte as head coach. Succeeding interim head coach Ralph Aubuchon, Schmidkte has been a volunteer assistant women's coach at Missouri.

Men's and women's skiing -- Brown appointed Karen Finocchio as head coach.

Softball -- Lisa Minton was awarded responsibilities as head coach at Tusculum, succeeding Kipp Keenan. For the past four seasons, Minton has been head softball and head volleyball coach at University of Virginia's College at Wise.

Men's and women's tennis assistant -- North Carolina-Greensboro added Mike Weidl as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's track and field assistant -- Ben Thomas was awarded assistant coaching duties at Georgia.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Southern Indiana chose Chrissy Smith as head coach. Smith most recently has been an assistant with the program.

STAFF

Administrative -- Alabama selected Randy Ross as high-school relations coordinator.

Development -- Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis named Chad Williams as director of athletics development ... Shay Wyatt was hired as executive director of the Wildcat Athletic Club at Weber State. Wyatt, who succeeds Carol Nelson, has been director of development for athletics at Utah Valley State College since 1998.

Sports information -- Northwood selected Ryan Thompson as sports information director ... Pat Madden was appointed as sports information director at Missouri-Kansas City.

Sports information assistant -- Brian Solomon was added as an assistant sports information director at Rider.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Steve Belcher resigned as programmer analyst I ... Student-athlete reinstatement representative Doug Archie resigned ... Colin Chappell resigned as programmer/analyst.

 

NOTABLES

North Carolina senior soccer player Meredith Florance was chosen as the Honda Award winner as the top woman collegiate athlete in her sport in 2000-01. Florance helped North Carolina capture the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship and was named as the tournament's offensive most valuable player.

The following soccer student-athletes were recognized as National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas Players of the Year: Division I: men's -- Ali Curtis, Duke; women's -- Anne Makinen, Notre Dame. Division II: men's -- Juan Carlos Bolanos, Cal State Dominguez Hills; women's -- Cindy Dostalek, UC San Diego. Division III: men's -- Scott Deopere, Wisconsin-Oshkosh; women's -- Victoria Nusse, College of New Jersey.

 

DEATHS

Mark McQuillin, defensive ends coach at Louisiana-Lafayette, died December 22. He was 38. McQuillin, who had been with the school for two seasons, spent three seasons as a defensive assistant coach at LSU before joining Louisiana-Lafayette.

Former Saint Anselm President Brendan Donnelly died November 30 at the age of 80.

Jim Tuppeny, former head track and cross country coach at Pennsylvania and former director of the Penn Relays, died November 29. Tuppeny, 75, also was track coach at Villanova.

Joe Donovan, former coach and athletics administrator at New Paltz State, died January 7. He was 78. In a tenure that spanned 26 years, Donovan fulfilled numerous posts at the school including athletics director, track coach, sports information director, athletic trainer and head men's basketball coach.
