Are you responsible for developing programming for student-athletes regarding alcohol abuse? If so, you may want to check into this free resource provided by the Century Council.
Funded by a grant from the Century Council, "Sourcebook 2001 -- Promising Practices: Campus Alcohol Strategies" highlights successful campus programs and provides ideas for their implementation.
According to a 1990 Carnegie report, college presidents cite student alcohol abuse as one of their top areas of concern.
The comprehensive book incorporates program abstracts collected recently from more than 400 submissions, as well as those previously published. A new portion of the book incorporates campus efforts in six key topic areas: Task Force, Community, Targeted Audiences, Stakeholders, Technology and Value Conflict Resolution.
The project co-directors are David S. Anderson, associate professor and director of the Center for the Advancement of Public Health at George Mason University, and Gail Gleason Milgram, professor and director of education and training at the Center of Alcohol Studies at Rutgers University.
In "Promising Practices," the co-directors seek to identify campus-based approaches for preventing and addressing alcohol-related problems among the college student population.
The book is part of a larger project, initiated in 1995, to prepare and distribute a range of resources. The other resources include a Task Force Planner, Task Force Planner Guide and The Action Planner: Steps for Developing a Comprehensive Campus Alcohol-Abuse Prevention Program.
All of the resources, including the book, are available at no charge by directly contacting The Century Council at
www.centurycouncil.org. In addition, all of the contents of the resources are available in their entirety on the directors' Web site, www.promprac.gmu.edu.--Kay Hawes
