When I filled out the application for the NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference, I didn't know what it was all about and I didn't give it too much thought at that point. Then when I was selected, I was surprised -- why me? I didn't think of myself as much of a leader, and here I was going to a leadership conference. How quickly these misconceptions changed during the week in Orlando, Florida.
The sense that you were amid something special happening was apparent when everybody came together on the first day to celebrate diversity through the expression of music. The beat of the drums was so electrifying -- you didn't just hear it, you felt it and it was a part of you, as you were a part of it. It was a perfect way to kick off the week, as it gave everybody a feeling of belonging.
Highlights of the conference for me were the speeches by Billy Mills and Richard Lapchick. Both were insightful and inspirational role models -- their messages of diversity are to be embraced.
Each and every day I was in awe of the sensational people who surrounded me -- the facilitators, staff and fellow student-athletes. I consider myself privileged to have worked with them. There was such a wealth of information coming from them. I learned so much from them all. It was sad to say our goodbyes, but we now have this incredible network to tap into. It gives me the opportunity to continue to pick the brains of these remarkable people.
The conference was a life-changing experience for me. I now have this strong sense that I'm not just a student-athlete, but one of tomorrow's leaders. The conference didn't just end when everyone got on a plane to return home -- it was too much of an unforgettable experience for that. The lessons learned, experiences gained, the inspiration and confidence inherited, and the lifetime friends formed will stay with me forever.
