Division III women's cross country coaches are used to competing against "dynasties," and another one may be forming as Middlebury repeated as champion November 17 at Augustana (Illinois).

All five of the Panthers' scorers in the championships were underclassmen. Middlebury had a team total of 98 points. Finishing in the runner-up position for the second straight year was Williams with 166 points.

St. Thomas (Minnesota) won four of the first seven Division III national championships. Cortland State and Wisconsin-Oshkosh were the only team titlists from 1988 to 1997, with Cortland State earning seven championships and Wisconsin-Oshkosh three. Calvin had back-to-back victories in 1998 and 1999 before Middlebury took over the top spot.

Another sign of the Panthers' increasing dominance of the championships is their wider margin of victory this year. In 2000, Middlebury edged Williams by a single point in the New England regional-qualifying meet and by 20 points in the national event. The Panthers upped their advantage over the Ephs to 11 points in this year's regional and nearly 70 in the championships.

Michela Adrian, a junior, led the way for Middlebury, placing 10th overall. She covered the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes, 27 seconds.

The future looks promising beyond just next year for head coach Terry Aldrich, as the next two Panthers to finish were freshman Jessica Manzer and sophomore Molly Yazwinski. Manzer was 13th, seven seconds behind Adrian, and Yazwinski came in 23rd.

Juniors Sarah Logan and Kaitlin Gregg were Middlebury's other two scorers. Logan came in 41st overall, 30th among team scorers. Gregg was 35th in the team scoring and 46th overall.

Williams appears ready to keep challenging Middlebury's reign. Freshman Jenn Campbell was third overall and junior Julia Bensen was sixth.

Dana Boyle of Puget Sound took the lead on a downhill portion of the course late in the race and went on to win the individual title with a time of 16 minutes, 46 seconds. Boyle pulled away from the field to record a winning margin of 26 seconds. Heidi Wolfsberger of Moravian finished second, just as she did in 2000, and the Greyhounds placed third as a team.
