Western State finished second six times during Adams State's run of eight straight titles in the Division II Women's Cross Country Championships from 1992 to 1999.

The Mountaineers snapped Adams State's streak last year and showed that they are in no hurry to give up the top spot after repeating as champion November 17 at Slippery Rock.

With three finishers in the top 10, Western State compiled a team score of 46 points. Adams State, which dropped to fifth place last year, moved back up the ladder to second in 2001. The Grizzlies were nine points behind Western State in the national championships, after trailing the Mountaineers by 19 in the North Central regional-qualifying meet two weeks earlier.

Hannah Lawrence gave Western State a sweep of the titles, winning the individual championship. She covered the 6,000-meter course in 21 minutes, 24.7 seconds. Lawrence was 14th in the 2000 championships.

Kennesaw State's Marjo Venalainen, the two-time defending champion, nearly became the first three-time winner in NCAA women's cross country championships history. Venalainen, who is expected to return for her senior season in 2002, was second, 7.1 seconds behind Lawrence.

Following Venalainen was Western State's Najeeby Quinn. Rebekah Mackie was the Mountaineers' third top-10 place-winner, coming in ninth.

Zoila Gomez was Adams State's first finisher, placing fifth. She was joined in the top 10 by teammate Virginia Coindreau in the seventh spot.

UC Davis kept alive its streak of being the only institution to qualify as a team for all 21 championships. The Aggies, who were led by Yvonne Liebig's 11th-place effort, finished third for the second year in a row.
