West Florida breezes to team title amid medalist drama

West Florida ended Florida Southern's three-year reign in the Division II Men's Golf Championships, posting a 15-stroke victory at the Meadows Golf Course on the campus of Grand Valley State.

West Florida, which captured the school's first national title in any sport, entered the final round with a 16-stroke lead and shot a final-round 294. Florida Southern's 293 was not enough to catch the Argonauts.

Florida Southern's Steve Sokol captured medalist honors in a four-hole playoff. Sokol, Cal State Stanislaus' Mark Lawless and West Florida's Kevin Warrick concluded the four rounds with identical scores of two-over 286. Warrick took a two-shot lead into the last two holes, but bogeyed the par-3 17th and finished with a par on No. 18. Sokol sank a long birdie putt on No. 17 and just missed another birdie on No. 18, while Lawless sank a birdie putt on the 18th hole to force the three-way playoff.

All three parred the first two playoff holes, but both Sokol and Warrick birdied the par-4 third hole, while Lawless managed a par. Warrick narrowly missed a par putt on the fourth playoff hole, while Sokol was able to par and capture the title.

Cal State Stanislaus captured third in the team race with a four-round total of 1,178, while Rollins was one shot back in fourth. Cal State Bakersfield and GC&SU tied for fifth.

Florida Southern's Steve Paramore was fourth individually with a 289 total, while West Florida's Stuart Manley and Bryan Clarke tied for fifth with four-round totals of 290.
