In March, St. Augustine's snapped Abilene Christian's five-year winning streak in the Division II Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships. Just two months later, the Falcons broke another Abilene Christian string by winning the outdoor meet May 24-26 at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.

This time, St. Augustine's ended the Wildcats' run at two titles by outpointing them, 80-59. UC Davis was third with 51 1/2 points.

The title was the Falcons' ninth outdoors and marks the sixth year in which they have won both track and field championships.

Tim Rusan sparked St. Augustine's effort by winning both the long jump and triple jump. He was one of five repeat winners from last year's meet after capturing the triple jump in 2000.

Marquis Davis also was a key contributor to the winners by placing second in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. The Falcons' 1,600-meter relay unit of Timothy Ramsey, Stephan Demeritte, Garrye Chavis and Prince Huffman also was victorious.

Abilene Christian was led by John Kemboi and Alfred Rugema. Kemboi won both the 800- and 1,500-meter runs for the second consecutive year. Rugema was second to his teammate in the 1,500 and also was the runner-up in the 5,000-meter run.

Rusan and Kemboi were among five athletes who won two events in the championship. New York Tech's Orville Taylor was first in the 200- and 400-meter dashes, Western State's Michael Aish captured the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs, and Angelo State's Curry Dawson swept the shot put and discus titles.

Joining Rusan and Kemboi as repeat winners from 2000 were Dawson in the discus, Aish in the 5,000 and Central Missouri State's Vladimir Golias in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Aish also won the 10,000 in 1999.

Golias won the steeplechase for the fourth straight year. He is just the second athlete in the championships' 39-year history to win the same event four times. Freddie Williams of Abilene Christian was the 800-meter run champion from 1984-87.
