The NCAA News

Milestone: Denise Dietrich, Salem International University, 100 wins in women's softball. Dietrich recently finished her sixth season as coach at Salem International. At the end of the season, her record stood at 110-115.

Miscellaneous: The South Atlantic Conference has unveiled a new logo that will be used with all conference championship events. "This new logo will give our championship events special recognition," said Commissioner Doug Echols. "We are very excited to unveil this new look as a bold move forward for the conference." The logo features the familiar SAC letters in bold type with embossed edges. A gold star sits in the middle of the letter "A," and a gold half ellipse gives the letters depth and a raised-edge feel.

Sports sponsorship: Central Missouri State University will add women's bowling to its intercollegiate athletics program for the 2001-02 academic year. "We are adding women's bowling to our athletics program in an effort to continue to provide opportunities for female student-athletes in accordance with Title IX," Central Missouri State President Bobby Patton said. "We have had an excellent women's bowling program that has been competing at the club level for a number of years. Nationwide, we are seeing an increasing number of schools adding this sport to their intercollegiate athletics program. As the sport's numbers increase, we think the NCAA will have an NCAA championship in women's bowling, perhaps as soon as two or three years from now." With the addition of women's bowling, Central Missouri State now offers 16 intercollegiate sports -- eight for each gender.
