The NCAA News

Sports sponsorship: The University of Southern Colorado has announced plans to eliminate its wrestling program. Media reports cited an athletics department deficit of $478,000 as prompting the decision. "We've covered that by taking money from the academic program," Southern Colorado President Tito Guerrero said. "We can't do that any longer." Guerrero said Southern Colorado would honor scholarships despite the program's elimination. The program has produced 38 all-American wrestlers.

Conferences: The Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference recently voted to add a men's and women's indoor track and field championship. The inaugural championship will take place during the last weekend in February 2002 and will increase the number of conference-sponsored championships to 22, believed to be the most in Division II. Other PSAC championships are offered in football, men's and women's soccer, field hockey, women's volleyball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's basketball, wrestling, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's outdoor track and field, baseball, women's softball, women's lacrosse, and coed golf.
