Michael J. Marcil, commissioner of the North Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, has been elected chair of the Division II Management Council.
Marcil will replace Jerry M. Hughes, athletics director at Central Missouri State University, at the conclusion of the 2002 Convention in Indianapolis.
In addition to his service on the NCAA Division II Management Council, Marcil has served on the Division II Committee on Infractions, the Division II Budget and Finance Committee, the Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the NCAA North Central Region Men's Basketball Committee. Marcil also chaired the NCAA Division II Compliance Blueprint Program Project Team in 2000-01.
He became the fifth commissioner in the history of the North Central Conference on October 20, 1997. Marcil came to the NCC after serving as an NCAA membership services representative for six years.
At the NCAA, Marcil conducted NCAA compliance reviews and assisted with the NCAA Division I athletics certification program.
Marcil also has been an assistant in the athletic departments at Creighton University, Miami-Dade Community College and St. Thomas University (Florida).
He also served as associate commissioner of the Northeast Conference.
Marcil, who is originally from Omaha, received a bachelor's degree from Creighton, a law degree from Marquette University and a master's degree in sports administration from St. Thomas.
His wife, Kim, is the head volleyball coach at Augustana College (South Dakota).
