ROCHESTER, Minnesota -- Cal Poly Pomona overcame a second-half deficit to force the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Championship game into overtime, then survived the extra period against North Dakota to win, 87-80, for its first title since 1986.
North Dakota jumped ahead early, scoring the first 12 points of the game, and led by as many as 16 in the first half. The Broncos answered, though, with a 23-6 run, and a basket by Aprile Powell with 2:31 left in the first half put Cal Poly Pomona ahead, 30-29.
North Dakota led, 35-34, at the half and enjoyed second-half leads of as many as nine points. But Powell and senior guard LaTasha Burnett combined to even the score for the Broncos with four minutes left in regulation.
North Dakota had a chance to win, but Theresa LeCuyer missed a shot with eight seconds left to make the championship game the second consecutive to be decided in overtime. Cal Poly Pomona scored first in the extra period and never relinquished the lead, with Powell's three-pointer pushing the Broncos ahead by five with two minutes to go.
"From the start, we had three things on our chalkboard: defense, rebounding and free throws," said Cal Poly Pomona coach Paul Thomas. "We did a good job with those down the stretch, in overtime and in the last four or five possessions."
Powell, a freshman, finished with 26 points and 18 rebounds and was named the tournament's most outstanding player. Powell had 60 points and 43 rebounds in the Elite Eight tournament.
"It was great to see the calmness in Aprile's demeanor," Thomas said. "Confidence is a wonderful thing when it is working. Why wouldn't she be confident after the two games she had coming into this one?"
Burnett, who played the last 14 minutes with four fouls and had 19 points and five steals, also was named to the all-tournament team. North Dakota's Jenny Boll, who had 25 points, and Mandy Arndtson were all-tournament honorees, along with Jessie Gordon from Shippensburg.
The Broncos (27-3) knocked off unbeaten Columbus State in the semifinals, while North Dakota (29-4) beat Shippensburg to advance to the championship game. Both finalists were seeking their fourth championship since the event began in 1982.
Attendance at the championship game was 3,387, bringing the three-day tournament total to 11,087.
