It turns out the "Pioneers" nickname is quite applicable to the C.W. Post women's lacrosse team -- on Mother's Day, the ladies from Long Island claimed the inaugural Divi- sion II Women's Lacrosse Championship, knocking off West Chester, 13-9.
The win avenged a 12-7 loss in April to the Golden Rams, the only Division II loss of the season for the Pioneers, who finished the year 12-4.
Junior Taryn Brody scored four goals, and classmate Shaden Ghattas had three to power the Pioneers' attack at Stonehill College. C.W. Post advanced to the title game by defeating the hosts, 11-10, in double overtime the day before.
C.W. Post broke a 4-4 tie on a goal by sophomore Kristy O'Connor with less than nine minutes remaining in the first half to take the lead for good. The Pioneers held a 6-5 advantage at halftime.
Goals by Ghattas and Brody built the Pioneers' lead to 8-5, 3:58 into the second half, but the Golden Rams, who finished the season 13-2, used a goal by junior Andrea Tyman to close back to 8-6.
Ghattas completed her hat trick with a pair of goals that followed sophomore teammate Tara Vokes' second goal of the day to give C.W. Post its largest lead of the game, 11-6, with 20 minutes left.
West Chester crept to within three goals on two occasions over the next nine minutes, but the Pioneers' defense held and Brody's fourth goal of the day with 43 seconds remaining capped off the scoring.
Freshman Trisha Moran, who had the game-winner against Stonehill in the semifinals, finished with two goals in the championship game.
For West Chester, Kim Rochon became the school's all-time leading scoring with a hat trick. Dulcie Royer also had three goals in the losing effort.
Junior Stacy Healy made four saves in goal for the winners; Jennifer Roman stopped 14 shots for West Chester.
C.W. Post sophomore Trish D'Amato was named the most outstanding player of the tournament. She was joined on the all-tournament team by Brody, Ghattas and Healy of the winners. Rochon, Tyman and Royer represented West Chester, while Stonehill placed junior Amy Bartlett and sophomore Katie Lambert on the squad. Gannon, which fell to West Chester in the other semifinal, was represented by senior Sara Brown, junior Jessica Lee and sophomore Carrie Dibasio.
