Administrators at Division II institutions with basketball programs should note a correction to a May 10 memorandum regarding men's and women's basketball rules and to a related article that appeared in the May 21 issue of The NCAA News.
The incorrect portion of those communications stated that the red indicator light and a scoreboard with a display of tenths of seconds in the final minute of a period were required for Division II institutions for the 2003-04 season. Instead, the Division II Management Council approved language that "highly recommended" (but did not require) that Division II schools have the red indicator light and tenths of a second device by 2003-04. Division II institutions still are required to have a shot clock that is mounted and recessed behind each backboard for the 2003-04 season.
In summary, the equipment rules changes for Division II basketball for 2003-04 are:
Shot clock mounted and recessed behind each backboard: required.
Red indicator light for showing expiration of game clock: highly recommended.
Game clock that shows tenths of seconds in last minute: highly recommended.
Information relating to Divisions I and III in the May 10 memo and the May 21 News story was correct.
