A dominating performance in the vertical jumps enabled St. Augustine's to leap past the field and win its eighth Division II Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship March 9-10 in Boston. The Eastern College Athletic Conference hosted the championships at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center. St. Augustine's placed four scorers in the long and triple jumps who combined for 38 of the Falcons' 74 total points. New York Tech earned its best team finish in the championships' history, placing second with 48 points, and five-time defending champion Abilene Christian was third with 47. Tim Rusan led the Falcons by winning both the long and triple jumps. He repeated as the triple-jump champion, and broke the meet record he set in 2000 by covering 53 feet, 11 3/4 inches this year. Maurice English placed second in the long jump for the second consecutive year for St. Augustine's. Ray Benjamin came in fourth in the triple jump for the Falcons, and Dane Magloire placed sixth in the long jump and seventh in the triple jump. The victory pulls St. Augustine's back into a tie with Abilene Christian for the most team titles, and keeps the Falcons' streak of finishing either first or second in all 16 national meets alive. New York Tech won three events on the way to its runner-up effort. Orville Taylor in the 400-meter dash and Kevin Mitchell in the 55-meter hurdles were individual champions, and Taylor joined with Warren Wilson, Paston Coke and Ceretsie Campbell to win the 1,600-meter relay. John Kemboi and Alfred Rugema were the key performers for Abilene Christian. Kemboi joined Rusan as a double winner, finishing first in the 800-meter and mile runs. They are the sixth and seventh athletes in the championships' history to win two events in the same meet. Rugema raced to second place in both the mile and 5,000-meter runs. Western State's Michael Aish became the fourth competitor to win the same event three times, setting the meet record in the 5,000 at 13 minutes, 44.27 seconds. Casey Seyfert of Fort Hays State was the only other repeat champion, adding the 2001 shot put title to the one he won in 1999. Team results 1. St. Augustine's, 74; 2. New York Tech, 48; 3.
