The Division I Women's Lacrosse Committee met June 5-8 in Jackson, Wyoming, to discuss several changes in future championships format, including a plan to enhance the identity of the event.

The group previously had recommended that the Division I and Division III championships, which had been held at the same site on the same weekend, be held at separate venues beginning in 2002. The two tournament finals still will be on the same weekend, but at different locations.

The Divisions I and III committees agreed that a separation of sites would reduce an institution's burden of having to host multiple teams and large numbers of fans, and allow smaller venues the opportunity to host a championship.

With each division striving to promote their own championship, Division I also decided to change its game format, staging the semifinals at 6 and 8:15 p.m. local time on Friday, May 17, 2002, and the championship game at 3 p.m. local time on Sunday, May 18.

The Division III semifinals and final will be held May 18-19.

The Division I committee is now soliciting bids for the 2002 championship. Interested parties must submit bid proposals to the NCAA national office no later than August 8.

In other actions during the committee's meeting, the group voted to retain the designated warm-up time of 45 minutes. The committee also decided to change the protocol of press conferences. During preliminary rounds, the visiting team will attend the press conference first, followed by the host school. In the semifinal round, the team advancing to the championship game will attend the press conference first. After the final, the losing team will attend the press conference first, followed by the winners.

The committee also determined that upon conclusion of the Division I championship, the all-tournament team will be selected as follows: two members from the two semifinals, three from the runner-up and five from the championship team, which will include the most outstanding player.

Regarding automatic qualification for the 2002 championship, the committee forwarded the following recommendations to the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet: Atlantic 10 Conference, Big East Conference, Colonial Athletic Association, Ivy Group, Metro Atlantic Conference, Northwest Conference and the Patriot League.

In other matters, the committee:

Noted that officials' fees have been increased from $125 to $200 for the 2002 semifinal and final.

Approved an appendix for the 2002 championship handbook that explains the power ranking criteria, as well as a sample formula, used in the championships selection process.
