Three-two-one. That's Southern California's progression up the Division I women's outdoor track and field ladder.

The Trojans reached the top rung May 30-June 2 at Oregon after finishing second last year and third in 1999. Led by three event winners, Southern California finished with 64 points, nine more than second-place UCLA.

"This championship was about good athletes and knowledgeable coaches creating an environment for people to show their talents," said Ron Allice, Southern California director of track and field.

"We've tried to instill pride and the will to win. The rest takes care of itself and, the last time I checked, that all spells success."

Southern California received first-place performances from Angela Williams in the 100-meter dash, Brigita Langerholc in the 800-meter run and Inga Stasiulionyte in the javelin throw. The win was the third straight for Williams, the first time a competitor has accomplished that feat in the 100 in the championships' 20-year history.

"I'm so excited right now," Williams said. "My cheeks are going to be sore from smiling so hard."

Also contributing to the Trojans' first women's track national title either indoors or outdoors were Kinshasa Davis (200-meter dash), Tatyana Obukhova (triple jump), Cynthia Ademiluyi (shot put) and Julianna Tudja (hammer throw). They all placed third.

UCLA finished second for the seventh time, including three of the last four years. The Bruins, who have placed in the top five in all but three of the championships, were sparked by Christina Tolson, the winner in the shot put and runner-up in the hammer throw.

The Pacific-10 Conference swept the top three places in the team standings, as Arizona took third with 44 points. The Wildcats' Brianna Glenn was the meet's only double winner after capturing the 200-meter dash and long jump.

Southern Methodist's Florence Ezeh joined Williams as a winner for the third year in a row. Ezeh unleashed a meet-record toss of 219 feet, 4 inches, in the hammer throw.

The only other repeat champion was Mary Jayne Harrelson of Appalachian State in the 1,500-meter run, an event she first won in 1999.

Also setting a meet record was Austra Skujyte of Kansas State in the decathlon. She totaled 5,857 points for the seven events in the competition.
