The Division I Women's Golf Committee has evaluated the first year of regional qualification and has decided to keep the system for the 2002 championships.

The group, which met June 27-29 in Monterey, California, thought the expanded regional system was a positive step for the tournament and that it met the goal of balancing the field.

The committee did decide to alter one portion of the regional system. If a school is the host institution for a regional, the two seeds in the opposite regions will be moved to another region. For example, if the No. 7 seed is hosting in the East region, the No. 7 team in the Central region will be moved to the West Regional. The No. 7 seed in the West will play in the Central.

The group thought that based on the representation at the final, the regional system worked well and the tournament had a representative split.

In other actions, the committee recommended the following sites for regional competition: Louisiana State University (2002 East), Michigan State University (2002 Central) and Stanford University (2002 West). The committee also recommended that Purdue University host the 2003 finals.

The group also approved new weather detection equipment for the championships.

In addition, the committee noted that the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet supported the women's golf committee's request to increase the field size by three participants, adding one individual competitor to each region.
