Sports sponsorship: The University of Nebraska, Lincoln, announced that men's swimming and diving would be discontinued as an intercollegiate sport at the school, effective with the 2001-02 season. Women's swimming and diving will continue as an intercollegiate sport. The school cited budgetary concerns as reason for the move, stating that eliminating the men's program will save about $500,000 annually. Nebraska officials said scholarships of swimming and diving athletes will continue to be honored. The move decreases the number of Big 12 Conference schools with intercollegiate men's swimming and diving programs to four.

Conferences: Youngstown State University has announced it will move from the Mid-Continent Conference to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference. The move will not include Youngstown State's Division I-AA football team, which competes in the Gateway Conference. "As a result of this action, we will begin formal discussions with the Mid-Continent Conference about an amicable withdrawal and schedule for that withdrawal, as well as work with the Midwestern Collegiate Conference," said Youngstown State President David C. Sweet. The Penguins have been members of the Mid-Con since the 1992-93 season. A definite arrival date for Youngstown State into the Midwestern Collegiate Conference has not been determined. "I can say the time frame is bounded by July 1, 2001, to July 1, 2002. It will occur sometime within," Sweet said. Youngstown State will be the ninth team in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference. The others are Butler University; Cleveland State University; the University of Detroit Mercy; the University of Illinois at Chicago; Loyola University (Illinois); the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay; the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee; and Wright State University. Youngstown State is the 12th team to leave the Mid-Continent Conference since the 1992-93 season.
