The NCAA Football Certification Subcommittee certified one new bowl game and recertified 24 others for the 2001-02 season during its April 24-28 meeting in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. In addition, the subcommittee approved six preseason exempt football games.
The New Orleans Bowl, new for 2001, received final certification and is scheduled to be played December 18. The champion of the Sun Belt Conference will play a Mountain West Conference opponent.
Among the 24 bowls that were recertified are two that will be played in different locations than last year. The former Jeep Aloha Bowl is scheduled to be played in San Francisco at Pacific Bell Park on December 30 at 5 p.m. Eastern time and will be called the Jeep San Francisco Bowl. The former Jeep Oahu Bowl will move to Seattle's Safeco Field and be played on January 2, 2002, at 5 p.m. Eastern time. It will be known as the Jeep Seattle Bowl.
"The subcommittee believes the change of venues is in the best interests of student-athletes and schools that participate in the Jeep bowls," said Mike Parent, chair of the subcommittee and faculty athletics representative at Utah State University. "We believe there will be an excellent bowl experience for student-athletes, universities and their fans in the new locations. There has been a fine tradition over the years in Hawaii."
Other 2001-02 certified bowls are included in the accompanying chart.
The Micronpc.com Bowl, which is administered by the Sunshine Football Classic, and has been played in Miami since 1990, received conditional certification. The subcommittee said bowl officials are required to submit more complete information to receive final recertification. That must be provided by June 15.
The subcommittee discussed the current bowl moratorium, which is in place until after the 2002-03 season. During the moratorium, no more than 26 postseason bowl games can be approved. The subcommittee is reviewing criteria and other issues pertaining to postseason football and is expected to provide initial reports to the Division I Football Issues Committee and the NCAA Football Study Oversight Committee in May.
The six preseason events certified by the committee are the NACDA Kickoff Classic, the NACDA Pigskin Classic, the Eddie Robinson Classic, the Hispanic College Fund Classic, the Jim Thorpe Classic and the John Thompson Classic.
The BCA Classic did not receive certification from the subcommittee pending a complete application.
The subcommittee will work with BCA officials during the spring toward certification of the event.
NCAA member institutions may not participate in postseason football competitions that are not certified.
The certification process ensures that bowls meet specific standards for such items as officiating, insurance and distribution of funds.
