Allison Comito scored with eight seconds remaining in the first sudden-death overtime period to lift Maryland over Georgetown, 14-13, May 20 at Johns Hopkins for the Terrapins' seventh straight Division I Women's Lacrosse Championship.
Maryland finished the season undefeated in 23 contests and won its 10th championship overall. Comito netted the winning goal off an assist from Tori Wellington, but the pair had different thoughts on the play as it developed.
"I wasn't exactly looking for anyone in particular," said Wellington. "I was looking to settle it (the ball) because our coaches were calling for that and then I saw Al (Comito) wide open in the middle.
"I think even before she shot the ball, I knew it was going in. I just knew she was going to do it."
Comito was not as sure of the result as her teammate. "It's kind of a blur," the Terp senior said. "All I remember is seeing Tori and calling for the ball and praying that I caught it, first of all, and then that I could get a good shot.
"I guess it worked out."
Overtime seemed an unlikely possibility after Maryland rolled to an 8-1 lead with 11:20 remaining in the first half. Georgetown, which rallied from an 8-4 halftime deficit to defeat Loyola (Maryland), 10-9, in the semifinals, came back again.
The Hoyas pulled to within three goals by halftime against Maryland at 9-6, but still trailed, 11-7, early in the second half. Gloria Lozano capped a three-goal Georgetown run with 15:58 remaining in regulation to narrow the Maryland lead to one.
Quinn Carney scored to push the Terps ahead, 12-10, but Lozano followed teammate Erin Elbe's goal with her second of the contest to knot the count at 12-12 at the 5:51 mark. Georgetown threatened to take the lead in the final minute of regulation, but Maryland goalkeeper Alexis Venechanos stopped a free position shot.
Maryland's Kelly Coppedge and Elbe traded goals during the six-minute overtime period, setting the stage for the sudden-death portion of extra play.
Courtney Hobbs and Coppedge each scored three goals for Maryland, which has a 43-game winning streak. Elbe led all goal scorers with six, and Sheehan Stanwick added two goals and three assists for the Hoyas.
Maryland defender Courtney Martinez was selected as the tournament's most outstanding player. She was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Jen Adams, Quinn Carney, Coppedge and Wellington. Elbe, Stanwick and Caitlin McLean were Georgetown's all-tournament team members.
Also earning all-tournament recognition were Suzanne Eyler and Stacey Morlang of Loyola (Maryland), and Rachel Becker and Jess Nelson of Princeton. Maryland defeated Princeton, 14-7, in the semifinals.
Georgetown finished the season with a 17-3 record.
