2001 Telephone Conference No. 8
Acting for the Division I Management Council, the Academics/Eligibility/ Compliance Cabinet Subcommittee on Legislative Review/Interpretations issued the following interpretation:
Eligibility/Hardship Waiver
Application of NCAA Proposal No. 2000-76 (eligibility -- hardship waiver).
Proposal No. 2000-76, which specifies that a medical hardship shall be calculated by measuring the number of scheduled contests or dates of competition rather than the completed contests or dates of competition, may not be applied on a retroactive basis. It is applicable only to student-athletes participating in competition during the 2001-02 academic year and thereafter. Further, an institution participating in a single-elimination event (for example, the preseason NIT) may only count the actual contests in which the institution participates (as opposed to the number of contests scheduled in the event) in determining the number of scheduled contests in the percent calculation (that is, the denominator).
