With just one event win, the Georgia Lady Bulldogs pulled off a surprise victory at the Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships March 15-17 to claim their third consecutive championship.
Without last year's co-swimmers of the meet Kristy Kowal and Courtney Shealy to dominate the competition, Georgia had to rely on solid finishes in almost every event to wrestle the title from challengers Auburn and Stanford.
The team title came down to the last day of competition, when several teams looked to move up in the standings. Auburn, which saw the slight lead it had over Georgia after the first day shrink even further after the second, finally slipped from first place with a lack of top-five finishes. Texas came on strong behind Colleen Lanne's win in the 100-yard freestyle, and Stanford's Misty Hyman claimed her second 200-yard butterfly title to give the Cardinal its eighth event win of the meet.
Meanwhile, Georgia continued to place swimmers in the top five of most events. And that meant the last event of the meet, the 400-yard freestyle relay, would determine the winner.
In the relay, Texas hit the wall first in a meet-record 3:14.52. Georgia finished second, good enough for first overall. Arizona helped the Bulldogs by finishing third in the event just ahead of Stanford, keeping the Cardinal just 1 1/2 points behind Georgia in the team standings.
Georgia coach Jack Bauerle said, "I'm happier than when we won the first one," adding, "It wasn't the prettiest meet, but we did it."
Texas took third with 350 1/2 points, while Auburn (324) and Arizona (304) finished out the top five.
Aside from the battle for the team title, several swimmers turned in outstanding performances. Texas' Lanne took individual honors in the 50-yard freestyle to go along with her win in the 100. California freshman Natalie Coughlin contributed 60 points to her squad and had meet-record wins in the 100-yard butterfly and the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events. She was named swimmer of the meet in what she called, "the best meet of my life."
In diving, Houston's Yulia Pakhalina claimed the one- and three-meter springboard titles to earn diver of the meet. Stanford's Erin Sones won the platform event.
