Although Arizona never seemed out of striking distance, Duke never seemed out of control in its quest for its third NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship. Behind national player of the year Shane Battier and the hot shooting of Mike Dunleavy, the Blue Devils defeated the Wildcats, 82-72, for their first title since 1992 April 2 in Minneapolis.

Arizona trailed by just two at halftime, but the Blue Devils went on an 11-2 run on a trio of three-point shots by Dunleavy to take a 50-39 lead. The Wildcats answered with a 9-0 run of their own before Duke extended the lead again to 10 points with 10:08 remaining in the season.

The Wildcats got within three points of Duke four times, but Battier, the most outstanding player of the tournament, answered three times. The senior's dunk with 2:31 remaining in the game was followed by a three-point shot by Jason Williams that gave Duke an insurmountable eight-point lead as time ran down.

"Shane wasn't hitting his jump shot, but he comes up with two amazing offensive rebounds," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said, describing two plays in the final 4 1/2 minutes when Battier scored after Arizona had closed within three.

Playing all 40 minutes, Battier finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. He finished his career with 131 victories, tying Kentucky's Wayne Turner, who played from 1996-99, for the NCAA record.

"It's complete," Duke's all-everything senior forward said. "All that's left for me is to ride off into the sunset on a white horse."

Dunleavy led Duke with 21 points, including a career-high five three-pointers and 18-second half points. Dunleavy and Battier were joined on the all-tournament team by Williams, who finished with 16 points after being in foul trouble throughout the game. Arizona's Loren Woods led all scorers with 22 points and was an all-tournament selection, along with teammate Richard Jefferson.

Arizona coach Lute Olson praised the resiliency of his team.

"All the emotions they had to go through, and they withstood them and did a great job to get to the final game," Olson said. "It's tough. Someone's got to lose it. Duke is deserving. We gave them a good run and couldn't get it done."

The national champions overcame a 22-point deficit against Maryland in the semifinals to keep their season alive, while Arizona defeated defending champion Michigan State for the right to vie for the title.

Duke had won back-to-back titles in 1991 and 1992, the second of which also was claimed in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis.
