The Division I Committee on Athletics Certification has determined the certification status of four Division I member institutions as part of the Association's second cycle of athletics certification.
The University of Wyoming, Campbell University and Southeastern Louisiana University were certified; Northern Illinois University was certified with conditions.
A designation of certified means that an institution operates its athletics program in substantial conformity with operating principles adopted by the Division I membership.
The committee said that before Northern Illinois can be considered for full certification, the university is required to demonstrate how it is accommodating the interests and abilities of student-athletes and to develop a gender-equity plan that addresses concerns expressed by the Committee on Athletics Certification about the participation rates of male and female student-athletes.
The university has demonstrated its interest in accommodating the interests and abilities of the student population, but its gender-equity plan does not currently contain measurable strategies to meet goals established by the institution.
As a part of the certification process, the institution is required to submit written evidence of its solution to this issue by June 1, 2002.
The second round of athletics certification is being completed on a 10-year cycle rather than the five-year cycle used during the initial certification process. All active Division I members participate in the certification process.
The certification program's purpose is to ensure integrity in the institution's athletics operations and to assist athletics departments in improving their programs. Legislation mandating athletics certification was adopted in 1993.
