Coaches association tabs new event to kick off soccer season

A new soccer event will debut this fall with the creation of the College Coaches Classic, a doubleheader that will feature the two reigning NCAA Division I national champions -- the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, women's soccer team and the University of Connecticut men's team.

The event, which will be administered by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, will be played Sunday, August 26, at the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta, New York.

The women's game will pit North Carolina against Connecticut, while the men's game will feature Connecticut against Pennsylvania State University.

The event will be played one week before the start of the regular season. It has been granted "exempt" status by the NCAA, meaning that while the outcome will count in the teams' records, participation will not be counted against the maximum number of games that can be scheduled in a season.

The College Coaches Classic will be the culmination of activities surrounding the Hall of Fame Weekend at the National Soccer Hall of Fame (NSHOF) for three organizations: the NSCAA, the National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association (NISOA) and the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO).

Other activities will include referee clinics, youth soccer games, a golf tournament, a Saturday evening dinner and a Sunday morning reception at the NSHOF museum.

For more information, see the NSCAA Web site at www.nscaa.com.

Spry honored by ABUA

Louis J. Spry, who spent 32 years on the NCAA national office staff, recently was one of the inductees into the Amateur Baseball Umpires Association hall of fame.

Much of Spry's time at the NCAA was spent in and around college baseball.

In 1967 he spent the first of five years as media coordinator for the College World Series.

From 1972-79, he was the staff administrator in charge of the event for the NCAA, and since 1981 he has been the official scorer for the College World Series.

Spry also has served as a Division I regional tournament manager since 1992, a position that has put him in charge of umpires.

It was Spry's relationship with and support of umpires that earned him induction into the ABUA Hall of Fame. Spry was the only one honored who had not served as a baseball umpire.

Others honored at the ABUA Hall of Fame Banquet January 6 in Nashville were Bob Jones, Anibal Rosario and Dale Williams.

"It truly was a memorable evening for four very deserving individuals," said Ted Breidenthal, ABUA executive director.

"These four men have joined an elite fraternity that is reserved only for the best of the best. Their emotion, passion and commitment to amateur baseball umpiring is a model for those umpires who aspire to greatness."

A grand duo

It was a double 1,000-point night for St. Cloud State University.

Tina Schreiner, a junior forward on the women's basketball team, and Rado Rancik, a junior forward on the men's basketball team, each scored their 1,000th career point in a North Central Conference doubleheader recently at the University of Northern Colorado.

Schreiner scored her 1,000th point on a free throw late in the game as she led the Huskies to an 83-65 victory. She finished the game with 20 points and 1,001 career points.

Rancik scored a career-high 29 points -- to give himself exactly 1,000 career points -- in a 71-65 win over the Bears. Rancik added a team-high six rebounds to the winning effort.

Number crunching

Grand Club

With a victory by the University of California, Los Angeles, men's volleyball team over Pepperdine University February 3, head coach Al Scates registered his 1,000th career victory, more than 230 wins more than his nearest competitor. In his 39th season as a head coach, Scates has a career record of 1,000-161.
