The National Collegiate Women's Ice Hockey Committee is discussing moving its championship to coincide with the Men's Frozen Four in an effort to gain more exposure for the event. The committee, which met in Indianapolis July 17-20, sees moving the championship as a potential positive to promote its championship. The committee will discuss logistics of a possible move at a future meeting, in addition to receiving comments from coaches and other groups.

"It would be a great opportunity for college hockey to be together during the same weekend," said Carolyn Campbell-McGovern, chair of the committee and senior associate director of the Ivy Group. "The Men's Frozen Four has enjoyed success with that traditional date. If the women's championship were part of that same weekend it would certainly be exciting."

The Division I Men's Ice Hockey Championship semifinals are on Thursday, with the final on Saturday evening. The Women's Frozen Four would likely keep the same format, playing semifinal games Friday and holding the third-place game and championship on Sunday.

This year's championship is set for March 22-24, 2002, at the University of New Hampshire.

In other action, the committee extended the bid deadline for the 2003 championship. The group also discussed specifications for hosting the championship, but did not make any formal modifications to the current structure.

The committee also:

Received a report from the rules committee, including changes to the committee structure and rules changes for the upcoming season.

Heard a report from Frank Cole, national coordinator of officials, regarding the selection and evaluation process for officials.

Reviewed all aspects of the 2001 championship, commended the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, for its role in hosting the inaugural championship and made necessary changes for the 2002 event.

Recognized Russ Reilly, Middlebury College, and Frank O'Brien, University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point, for their service to the committee.
