The NCAA Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee has voted to change or eliminate the maximum weights for implements from those published in the 2001 NCAA Track and Field/Cross Country Rules, effective immediately.

In both the men's shot put and hammer throw, the implement may now weigh a maximum of 7.335 kilograms (16 pounds, 2.735 ounces). The women's shot and hammer may now weigh a maximum of 4.075 kilograms (8 pounds, 15.741 ounces).

Previously, the maximums were 7.285 kilograms for men's implements and 4.025 kilograms for women's.

The maximum weight of the men's javelin, inclusive of the cord grip, is now 850 grams (1 pound, 13.983 ounces). The maximum weight of the women's javelin, inclusive of the cord grip, is now 650 grams (1 pound, 6.928 ounces).

Both maximums were increased by 25 grams.

The committee decided to eliminate a maximum weight for the men's and women's discus.

In all of the events, the minimum weights as published were not changed.

The committee made the changes as a result of concerns from coaches and manufacturers of the difficulty in producing implements within the previous ranges.
