Tennessee used a strong performance from its sprinters, including two freshmen, to edge TCU by a point in the Division I Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 30-June 2 at Oregon.

The Volunteers earned their third title with 50 points. The championship-clinching point was scored by the 1,600-meter relay team in the final event of the meet. Knowing it only had to finish the event to secure the point to break the tie with TCU, Tennessee's unit passed the baton carefully and placed eighth.

Freshman Justin Gatlin played the key role in getting Tennessee into position to win its first team title since a 1991 triumph at Oregon by capturing the 100- and 200-meter dashes. "I felt real confident after the SEC (Southeastern Conference) championships and right now I am overwhelmed with pride," Gatlin said. "I've learned how to concentrate on my own race and how to prepare."

Gatlin was the meet's only individual double winner.

Sean Lambert, also a freshman, supported Gatlin's effort by finishing fourth in the 100. His position was another important factor in Tennessee's victory, as he placed just ahead of a pair of TCU competitors.

Gatlin and also Lambert made up half of the Volunteers' second-place 400-meter relay team. They were joined by Leonard Scott, who added a sixth-place finish in the 200, and Hassaan Stamps.

"I couldn't be more excited," Tennessee head coach Bill Webb said. "I said earlier that it would take 50 points to win it (the championship).

"I'm not, but it made me look smart."

TCU's best team finish in the championship was made possible by Darvis Patton, who was third in the 200, fourth in the long jump and sixth in the 100. He also was a member of the Horned Frogs' winning 400-meter relay team. TCU ended third in the team scoring in both 1987 and 1998.

Auburn's Avard Moncur and Mississippi's Savante Stringfellow won events for the second consecutive year. Moncur captured the 400-meter dash and Stringfellow the long jump.

There were three athletes who repeated as individual champions after first winning in 1999. Bayano Kamani of Baylor (400-meter intermediate hurdles), Janus Robberts of Southern Methodist (shot put) and Andras Haklits of Georgia (hammer throw) all returned to the top of the victory stand. Haklits was competing for Louisiana-Monroe when he won his first title.
