Based on a directive from the Division II Championships Committee, the Division II Men's and Women's Tennis Committees worked to determine championship berth allocations during the NCAA Men's and Women's Tennis Committees' annual meetings July 9-13 in Bend, Oregon.
In January 2001, the Division II Championships Committee increased Division II tennis regions from four to nine. The committee mandated that each region receive an automatic berth in the championships. The Division II tennis committees were charged with determining how the remaining seven at-large bids would be distributed among the nine regions.
The tennis committees proposed a system similar to that used in Division II cross country where quarterfinal play from each year's championship is reviewed, and the seven remaining bids are distributing to teams that appeared in the quarterfinals. With the stipulation that no region can receive more than three additional at-large bids, the proposed allocation will provide for better regional representation at the championships. If the recommendation is approved, the system will take effect for the 2002 championships.
Also, the Division II tennis committees are considering establishing, before the championships, a full bracket based on the seeding of all 64 teams participating in all rounds of the championships. The change in procedure is intended to make for more interesting match-ups and to allow teams to know in advance whom they will play.
In Division I committee actions, both the men's and women's committees made the following recommendations to the Championships/Competition Cabinet that would apply to potential hosts of championships play:
That an official chair every match;
That a head referee is at every site;
That hotels be secured within 30 miles of the playing facility;
That each site have six outdoor courts of similar quality;
That an additional six courts be available for practice (does not have to be on site);
That spectator seating is available; and
That the host have appropriate game management personnel available.
Division I also is in preliminary discussions regarding the possibility of moving the individual championships to the fall. Such a move could help improve student-athlete welfare by reducing the physical strain on student-athletes who play in both the team and individual competitions. Also, the move might reduce missed class time and enhance the student-athlete experience. The group agreed to discuss the matter further at a future meeting.
In other Division I actions, the men's committee recommended to the Championships/Competition Cabinet that selection criteria be clarified to "must have a win percentage of .500 or better" to receive an invitation to the championships. Automatic qualifiers would be exempt from that clarification. If approved, implementation would be for the 2003 championships.
Also, the women's committee defined late-season results as "the last eight matches of the season."
Meanwhile, Division III discussed extending the time between first- and second-round play to a full week. The committee will forward the recommendation to the Division III Championships Committee. On the men's side, the committee recommended a change in the number of regional qualifiers in efforts to balance the regions. The proposal would give the Atlantic South seven bids, up from six, and the West would get five bids instead of six. The men also will re-establish the use of an entry form for the championship.
