Spring championships preview -- Women's Tennis

Division I

Dates and sites: Regionals will be at campus sites May 11-13. Quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will be May 17-26 at the Lincoln Tennis Center in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Georgia State will serve as host.

Field: The team championships shall comprise 64 teams. Individual championships shall consist of 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams.

2000 team champion: Georgia.

Top team contenders: Stanford, Duke, Georgia, Vanderbilt, Florida.

Top individual contenders: Laura Granville, Stanford; Ansley Cargill, Duke; Aarthi Venkatesan, Georgia; Julie Ditty, Vanderbilt; Whitney Laiho, Florida.

Division II

Dates and sites: Regionals will be held at campus sites May 4-6. West Florida will host the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals May 10-13 at Pensacola, Florida.

Field: The team championship comprises 64 teams. Single-elimination tournaments will be played at 16 regional sites (three or four teams at each site) and the finals site (16-team bracket) to determine the national champion.

2000 team champion: Brigham Young-Hawaii.

Top team contenders: Brigham Young-Hawaii, West Florida, Lynn, Rollins, Barry.

Top individual contenders: Petra Gaspar, Brigham Young-Hawaii; Andreea Petrisor, West Florida; Monika Mastalirova, Lynn; Anzela Zguna, Rollins; Victoria Courmes, Barry.

Division III

Dates and sites: Preliminary-round competition will be conducted at campus sites May 12-13. Quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will be May 18-23 in San Antonio. Trinity (Texas) will host.

Field: The team championship will consist of 26 teams. Individual championships will consist of 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams. Teams will play a single-elimination tournament to determine the national champion.

2000 team champion: Trinity (Texas).

Top team contenders: Trinity (Texas), Williams, Amherst, Gustavus Adolphus.

Top team contenders: Lizzie Yasser, Trinity (Texas); Caroline Wasserman, Williams; Jamie Cohen, Amherst; Kristin Donley, Gustavus Adolphus.

As of late March, Brigham Young-Hawaii was riding an 89-match winning streak and had yielded only 11 points in its 22 matches.
