Spring championships preview -- Women's Lacrosse

The NCAA News

Division I

Dates and sites: First-round games are May 10 on campus; quarterfinals are May 13 on campus; and the semifinals and final are May 18 and 20 at Johns Hopkins.

Field: The championship is a 16-team, single-elimination tournament. The America East Conference, Atlantic 10 Conference, Big East Conference, Colonial Athletic Association, Ivy Group and Northeast Conference have been awarded automatic qualification; all other teams are selected at-large.

Selection date: May 6.

2000 champion: Maryland.

Top team contenders: Duke, Georgetown, Loyola (Maryland), Maryland, North Carolina, Princeton.

Players to watch: Jen Adams, Maryland; Trisha Dabrowski and Stacey Morlang, Loyola (Maryland); Allison Comito, Maryland; Bowen Holden and Sheehan Stanwick, Georgetown.

Division II

Dates and site: The semifinals and final will be May 11-12 on campus.

Field: The championship is a four-team, single-elimination tournament. Two teams will be selected from each of two regions and paired against each other for the semifinals. The regional winners will play for the national championship.

Selection date: May 6.

2000 champion: This is the first year for the event.

Top team contenders: Bloomsburg, Gannon, Limestone, Longwood, West Chester.

Players to watch: Kim Rochon and Shannon Eidse, West Chester; Jessica Lee, Gannon; Jackie Angermeier, Bloomsburg; Shaden Ghattas, C.W. Post.

Division III

Dates and sites: Regionals are May 12 and 13 on campus. The semifinals and final are May 19-20 at Johns Hopkins.

Field: The championship is a 16-team field consisting of three selection pools. First, 10 berths (Pool A) will be allocated to automatic-qualifying conferences. Five berths (Pool B) will be reserved for true independents and those teams that are members of conferences that do not meet the criteria for automatic qualification. Third, one berth (Pool C) will be provided for those teams remaining from automatic-qualifying conferences that do not win their conference's automatic berth.

Selection date: Sunday, May 6.

2000 champion: College of New Jersey.

Top team contenders: Amherst, Middlebury, College of New Jersey, William Smith, Williams.

Players to watch: Kristin Osborn, Amherst; Jenn Mazzadra, Salisbury State; Betsy Wheeler and Kate Robertson, Middlebury; Janae Durkin and Megan McCall, College of New Jersey; Megan Shea, William Smith.

After years of a National Collegiate championship that included one Division II team, Division II will conduct its own championship for the first time.
