Spring championships preview -- Women's Golf

Division I

Dates and sites: Regionals will be played May 10-12: East (Finley Golf Course, Chapel Hill, North Carolina; North Carolina, host); Central (Birk Boilermaker Golf Complex/Kampen Course, West Lafayette, Indiana; Purdue, host); and West (Trysting Tree Golf Club, Corvallis, Oregon; Oregon State, host). The finals will be May 22-25 at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort at Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida. Stetson and the Orlando Sports Commission will serve as co-hosts.

Field: A total of 321 participants representing five districts will participate in three regionals to determine the championships field of 126 competitors.

Selection date: April 30.

2000 team champion: Arizona.

Top team contenders: Duke, Arizona, Auburn, Southern California, Stanford, Tennessee, New Mexico State and Texas.

Top individual contenders: Lorena Ochoa, Arizona; Candie Kung, Southern California; Young-A Yang, Tennessee; Candy Hannemann, Duke; Stacy Prammanasudh, Tulsa; Katherine Hill, Pepperdine.

Division II

Dates and sites: The championship finals will be May 16-19 at the Rock Hill Country Club in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The South Atlantic Conference will host the championships.

Field: Forty-eight student-athletes will compete in a 72-hole competition.

Selection date: May 8.

2000 team champion: Florida Southern.

Top team contenders: Rollins, Florida Southern, Western New Mexico, Longwood, Lynn, Northeastern State, Barry, Gardner-Webb.

Top individual contenders: Kara Hutton, Barry; Ellen Berg, Longwood; Rachel Bell, Florida Southern; Jennifer Beames, Rollins.

Division III

Dates and sites: The championships finals will be May 15-18 at the Hickory Point Golf Course in Decatur, Illinois. Millikin will serve as host.

Field: Sixty-three participants will compete in the 72-hole competition.

Selection date: May 7.

2000 team champion: Methodist.

Top team contenders: Methodist, Rhodes, Concorida (Minnesota), Mary Hardin-Baylor, Simpson.

Top individual contenders: Amy Shidler, Franklin; Emily Burch, Rhodes; Randi Reed, McMurray; Patricia Kuehner, Franklin; Donya Tetrault, Millikin.

Divisions II and III will have separate championships for the second year after sharing the event from 1996 through 1999. Florida Southern has had the most individual champions with four, including Lisa Cave's back-to-back titles in 1999 and 2000.
