Spring championships preview -- Men's Tennis

Division I

Dates and sites: Regionals will be at campus sites May 11-13. Georgia will host the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals May 19-28.

Field: The team championships comprise 64 teams. Individual championships consist of 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams.

2000 team champion: Stanford.

Top team contenders: UCLA, TCU, Duke, Texas A&M, Georgia.

Top individual contenders: Jean-Julian Rojer, UCLA; Esteban Carril, TCU; Marko Cerenko, Duke; Bo Hodge, Georgia.

Division II

Dates and sites: Regionals will be held at campus sites May 4-6. West Florida will host the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals May 10-13.

Field: The team championship comprises 64 teams. Single-elimination tournaments will be played at 16 regional sites (three or four teams at each site) and the finals site (16-team bracket) to determine the national champion.

2000 team champion: Lander.

Top team contenders: Drury, Valdosta State, Lander, Brigham Young-Hawaii, Armstrong Atlantic.

Top individual contenders: Jalal Chafai, Drury; Marco Borges, Valdosta State; Tobias Huning, Lander; Peter Madarassy, Brigham Young-Hawaii; Stefan Wirtz, Armstrong Atlantic.

Division III

Dates and sites: Preliminary-round competition will be conducted May 11-13 at campus sites. DePauw will host the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals May 18-23.

Field: The team championship will consist of 27 teams. Individual championships will consist of 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams. Teams will play a single-elimination tournament to determine the national champion.

2000 team champion: Trinity (Texas).

Top team contenders: UC Santa Cruz, Trinity (Texas), Gustavus Adolphus, Emory.

Top individual contenders: Derek Fitzpatrick, UC Santa Cruz; Sloan Rush, Trinity (Texas); Nick Crossley, Gustavus Adolphus; Brett Kaplan, Emory.

California schools have claimed 48 of the 54 titles awarded in the history of the Division I Men's Tennis Championships.
