Spring championships preview -- Men's Golf

Division I

Dates and sites: The following regionals will be conducted May 17-19: East (Golden Horseshoe Golf Club, Williamsburg, Virginia; Virginia Commonwealth, host); Central (Karsten Creek, Stillwater, Oklahoma; Oklahoma State, host); and West (Trysting Tree Golf Course, Corvallis, Oregon; Oregon State, host). Duke will host the finals May 30-June 2 at the Duke University Golf Club in Durham, North Carolina.

Field: A total of 421 participants will be selected for regional competition, with 30 teams and 156 players advancing to the championship finals.

Selection date: May 8.

2000 team champion: Oklahoma State.

Top team contenders: Georgia, Clemson, Georgia Tech, TCU, Florida, South Carolina, Southern California, Texas.

Top individual contenders: Bryce Molder, Georgia Tech; Lucas Glover, Clemson; Erik Compton, Georgia; David Sanchez, North Carolina State; John Engler, Clemson; Chris Wisler, East Tennessee State.

Division II

Dates and sites: Three regionals will be conducted May 7-9. Host institutions are Lewis (North), Rollins (South) and Cal State Bakersfield (West). The championship finals will be May 22-25 at The Meadows Golf Club in Allendale, Michigan. Grand Valley State will serve as host.

Field: A total of 45 teams will be selected for regional competition, with 18 teams and three individuals advancing to the championships.

Selection date: April 23.

2000 team champion: Florida Southern.

Top team contenders: Florida Southern, Grand Canyon, Cal State Bakersfield, West Florida, UC Davis.

Top individual contenders: John Davis, Grand Canyon; Curtis Garver, Nebraska-Kearney; Joe Norman, Charleston (West Virginia); Steve Sokol, Florida Souther, Marty Jertson, Colorado School of Mines.

Division III

Dates and site: Maryville University in St. Louis, Missouri will host the championships May 6-10 at The Persimmons Woods Golf Course in Weldon Springs, Missouri.

Field: A total of 120 participants from six districts will compete for the team and individual championships.

Selection date: May 1.

2000 team champion: Greensboro

Top team contenders: Guilford, Methodist, St. John's (Minnesota), Gustavus Adolphus, Greensboro.

Top individual contenders: Chad Collins, Methodist; Toni Karjalainen, Averett; Dave Easley, Nebraska Wesleyan; Savio Nazareth, Guilford; Blake Seider, Concordia (Wisconsin).

Yale (21), Houston (16) and Princeton (12) are the team title leaders in the long history of the Division I championships, but none has won a crown since Houston in 1985. Yale's last title was in 1943, Princeton's in 1940.
