Six nationally recognized leaders have been appointed to the NCAA Foundation Board of Directors. All of the appointments are new positions, and they bring to 29 the number of members now on the board.
The six new members are Napoleon Brandford III, chair and co-founder of Siebert, Brandford Shank & Company, L.L.C; Robert J. Brown, chair and chief executive officer of B&C Associates, Inc.; Karen L. Katen, president of U.S. Pharmaceuticals Pfizer, Inc.; David B. Mathis, chair and CEO of Kemper Insurance Companies; Robin Roberts, ESPN and ABC anchor and reporter; and Donna F. Tuttle, president and co-founder of the Korn Tuttle Capital Group, Inc.
Brandford
Brandford is the chair and co-founder of Siebert, Brandford Shank & Company, LLC, with clients that include the cities of Houston, Dallas,
Seattle, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Phoenix, and the states of California, Texas and Ohio.He previously served as the interim assistant treasurer/chief financial officer for the California Health-Care Foundation from 1996 to 1997 and as vice-chair for Grigsby Brandford and Company, Inc., an investment banking firm that Brandford co-founded, from 1985 to 1996. Before that, Brandford served as vice-president in the San Francisco office of Shearson/American Express. He also worked as the assistant finance director for Dade County, Florida, from 1978 to 1982.
Brandford graduated from Purdue University with a degree in international studies. He earned his master's degree in public administration from the University of Southern California.
Brown
Brown is chair and CEO of B&C Associates, Inc., a management consulting, marketing research and public relations firm headquartered in High Point, North Carolina. He also is the chair and CEO of B&C International, Inc., and president of South Africa BookSmart Foundation.
B&C was founded in 1960 and has a client base that includes Sara Lee, General Motors, Coca-Cola, Nissan, Michelin and Sonoco.
A native of North Carolina, Brown attended North Carolina A&T State University and Virginia Union University. In 1956, he entered the field of law enforcement, serving first as a police officer and then as a federal agent with the U.S. Department of the Treasury. He established B&C Associates, Inc., in 1960 and served as president and CEO until 1968 when he took a leave of absence to serve as a special assistant to President Nixon. He returned to B&C as chair and CEO in 1973.
Katen
Katen is president of U.S. Pharmaceuticals Pfizer, Inc., a multinational health-care company discovering and providing human and animal pharmaceuticals in more than 80 countries. In 1999, the company had revenues exceeding $16 billion and had invested almost $3 billion in scientific research and development.
Katen also serves on the Board of Directors of the General Motors Corporation, the Board of the Harris Corporation and on the International Council of J.P. Morgan & Co.
She earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Chicago before joining Pfizer in 1974. She has been actively involved in the launch of every new pharmaceutical product by the company since 1975.
Katen recently was named one of the most 50 powerful women in business by Fortune Magazine and as one of the top 25 executives by Business Week.
Mathis
Mathis is chair and CEO of Kemper Insurance Companies, which has operations in commercial and personal insurance and risk management.
Mathis joined Kemper's operation in 1956 as a college intern participating in the Kemper Scholar program. Starting full-time in 1960, he worked his way up to sales manager of the San Francisco office. Then in 1970, he was sent to Europe with the Kemper Reinsurance Company. In 1978, Mathis was elected president of Kemper International Insurance Company, and he was named general manager of Kemper's national/international department in 1979. He returned to Kemper reinsurance in 1982 as president and CEO. In 1990, when the management of Kemper Corporation and Kemper Insurance Companies was split, Mathis was elected president and CEO of Kemper Corporation.
Mathis is a graduate of Lake Forest College. He is chair of the board of trustees of the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management of Northwestern University.
Roberts
Since joining ESPN in 1990, Roberts has been one of the network's most versatile commentators. Her assignments have included hosting SportsCenter and the Sunday morning program, Sunday SportsDay. She also is a contributor to NFL Prime Time and most recently was named host of ESPN Classic's Vintage NBA, which debuted in 1999.
Roberts also has hosted the NCAA Woman of the Year banquet since its inception in 1991, and she has played a prominent role for ESPN in broadcasting women's college basketball.
Roberts graduated cum laude in 1983 from Southeastern Louisiana University with a degree in communications. She also played basketball there, ending her career as the school's third all-time leading scorer and rebounder.
She was inducted into the Women's Institute on Sport and Education's Hall of Fame in 1994.
Tuttle
Tuttle is president and co-founder of the Korn Tuttle Capital Group, Inc., a diversified holding company based in Los Angeles. She also co-owns several sports entities, including the Utah Grizzlies, an International Hockey League franchise; the Tallahassee Tiger Sharks of the East Coast Hockey League; the Utah Freezz, an indoor soccer team; the Tallahassee Thunder of the newly formed Arena Football League; and the San Bernardino Stampede minor-league baseball club, affiliated with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Tuttle served as U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce during the Reagan Administration. Before forming Korn Tuttle, she was chair and CEO of Ayer Tuttle, the western division of NW Ayer, an international advertising agency.
From 1983 to 1988, Tuttle served as the U.S. undersecretary of commerce for travel and tourism.
She is a member of several boards of directors, including the Hilton Hotels Corporation and Phoenix Investment Partners.
