A featured speaker at the NYSP's national workshop in January was U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher, who addressed the topic of enhancing efforts to promote the health of young people through physical activity and participation in sports. Satcher said the NYSP serves an ideal role in that regard.

"Assuring that every child has an optimal opportunity for a healthy start in life is among our nation's greatest priorities," Satcher said. Satcher offered his "prescription" for healthy living, which includes moderate physical activity at least five days per week; a healthy diet that features fruits and vegetables; avoiding tobacco, drugs and alcohol; and responsible sexual behavior.

Satcher said that to increase their levels of physical activity and fitness, young people can benefit from family role models, school programs and youth sports and recreation programs -- such as NYSP.

"The National Youth Sports Program is helping to provide young people valuable, lifesaving lessons about health and fitness that can reduce serious health risks and result in years of healthy living," he said.
