The four 2001 Verizon Academic All-America Fall/Winter At-Large Team Members of the Year feature two male student-athletes from the University of North Dakota -- ice hockey goalie Karl Goehring and swimmer Ryan Requist -- and University of Georgia swimmer Kimberly Black and Emory soccer goalie Andrea Pawliczek.
The four head the men's and women's at-large teams announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Goehring, Team Member of the Year in the men's university division, helped lead North Dakota, which competes at the Division I level in ice hockey, to a runner-up finish this year. Requist, Team Member of the Year in the men's college division, was a 19-time all-American and is the school record holder in the 200- and 1,000-yard freestyles.
It is the first time since the Team Member of the Year award was established in 1987 that one school has had two different winners.
Black, Team Member of the Year in the women's university division, was a member of Georgia's national championship team in women's swimming and finished school with a perfect grade-point average. She also was awarded an NCAA Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship in April (see story, page 6).
Emory's Pawliczek, who was the Team Member of the Year in the women's college division, finished sixth in the nation in goals-against average, recording 14 shutouts, and ranked first in her class of 1,076 students. Teammate Annie Schenck also made the first team.
Two members of the men's college division, Joel Klooster and Paul Petersen, are from Calvin College's cross country team, which won the Division III national championship.
The University of Scranton had two student-athletes named to the women's college division first team -- soccer player Nicole Bayman and swimmer Sarah Gazdalski.
The Verizon Academic All-America Teams are selected by a vote of the 1,800-member CoSIDA. Nominees must be varsity starters or key reserves and maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.200 (4.000 scale).
