The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Foundation will provide a special scholarship grant to one member of each team that participated in the 2001 Kickoff Classic and Pigskin Classic, the two NACDA-sponsored preseason football games.

Four $5,000 grants, a total of $20,000, are awarded annually to a varsity football letter-winner from each team. The student-athlete must be in his final year of eligibility and carry a minimum grade-point average of 3.000 (4.000 scale).

Winners of the 2001 scholarship grants are George Godsey, Georgia Institute of Technology quarterback who is an industrial and systems engineering major; Kyle Johnson, Syracuse University fullback who is majoring in television, radio and film; Bruce Roberts, a tight end at Texas Christian University majoring in finance; and Dave Volk, an offensive tackle and psychology major at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.

"This furthers the NACDA Foundation's commitment to providing advanced educational opportunities," said NACDA President Bill Bradshaw, athletics director at DePaul University.

Nebraska defeated TCU, 21-7, in Pigskin Classic XII, while Georgia Tech stopped Syracuse, 13-7, in Kickoff Classic XIX.

Godsey, who received the William J. Flynn Award as the Most Valuable Player of the Kickoff Classic, also was Georgia Tech's MVP in 2000. He was named the Atlantic Coast Conference offensive back of the week three times last year, earning second-team all-ACC honors. He also was named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll. Godsey ranks third in Georgia Tech history with 33 touchdown passes and fourth with 4,487 career passing yards.

Johnson has been an Arthur Ashe Scholar-Athlete from 1997 to 2000 and was a member of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team. He was named to the Academic All-Big East Team three times from 1997 to 1999 and has been on the Director of Athletics' Honor Roll each semester. Ranked as the No. 1 fullback in the NCAA by the Sporting News in 2000, he was listed 10th in 2001. Johnson has also been president of Syracuse's Student-Athlete Council for three years.

Roberts is a three-time all-Western Athletic Conference academic selection. He was only the third true freshman in TCU history to start the first game of the season and has started every game since. He has been president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a Bob Lily FCA Student-Athlete of the Year Award winner, a participant in Habitat for Humanity and TCU Leaps, a campus community-outreach program.

Volk is a three-time, first-team Academic All-Big 12 honoree who has been on the Big 12 Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll six times. Volk is Nebraska's team captain this season. He was a representative of Nebraska's Football Unity Council and has volunteered with the Peoples City Mission, the Village Manor Nursing Home and with the Teammates Mentor Program.

The four student-athletes will be honored during NACDA's 37th annual convention June 16-19 in Dallas.

The NACDA Foundation, founded in 1982, sponsors internship opportunities for aspiring athletics administrators at NACDA's national office. It also provides educational opportunities for NACDA members through a variety of workshops, clinics and seminars. The Foundation has awarded almost $10 million in scholarships since its inception.

Funding for the Foundation comes from the Kickoff and Pigskin Classics, whose proceeds also help fund the National Football Foundation and the American Football Coaches Association. Those two games annually generate $420,000 in scholarships.
