NACDA convention to feature broad array of discussion forums

More than 1,200 athletics directors, administrators and conference commissioners from all levels of collegiate competition are expected to attend the 36th annual National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) convention June 10-13 at the Little and Grand America Hotels in Salt Lake City.

In addition, the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators, the National Association of Athletic Development Directors and the National Collegiate Licensing Association, all administered by NACDA, will hold their annual workshops in conjunction with the convention June 8-10. The National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators will hold its annual meeting June 9-10, while the College Athletic Business Management Association will hold its meeting June 13-16. After the convention, the annual NACDA Management/Leadership Institute will occur June 13-16.

Tommy Lasorda, manager of the 2000 Gold Medal winning U.S. Olympic Baseball Team and former manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, will deliver the convention keynote add
division breakout sessions, including a Division I Town Meeting covering topics such as amateurism, the diminishing voice of athletics directors, the role of student-athlete governance, and issues regarding pay for play. A second Division I Town Meeting June 12 will cover basketball and football issues, diversity, recruiting, and selecting and training coaches and staff.

The James J. Corbett Awards Luncheon will be June 11. In addition to the presentation of the James J. Corbett Memorial Award (NACDA's highest honor), the NACDA/NIT Athletics Directors Award, the NACDA Award of Merit, the SportsBusiness Journal Athletics Director of the Year Award, and the NACDA/Continental Airlines AD of the Year Awards will be presented.

The NACDA Scholarship Awards Luncheon, presented by Sears, will be conducted June 12 and will feature the awarding of the four Sears Directors' Cup trophies, the Sears Directors' Cup Postgraduate Scholarship Awards, the John McLendon Memorial Minority Postgraduate Scholarship Awards and the NACDA Foundation Football Scholarship Awards. Leslie Gudel of ABC Sports will be the luncheon emcee.

Also on June 11, the Honda Sports Awards Program will hold its 25th Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year Banquet, during which the Honda-Broderick Cup will be presented to the female athlete of the year.

A special award will also be presented to the top woman collegiate athlete of the past 25 years, as selected by the nation's colleges from among all former Cup winners. Ann Meyers of ESPN will emcee the banquet.

In addition to the many panel and round-table discussions, more than 160 athletics-related exhibitors will be on hand to display their wares in the exhibit hall.
