The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Foundation will provide a special scholarship grant to one member of each team that participated in the 2000 Kickoff Classic and Pigskin Classic, the two NACDA-sponsored preseason football games.
Four $5,000 grants, a total of $20,000, are awarded annually to a varsity football letter-winner from each team. The student-athlete must be in his final year of eligibility and carry a minimum grade-point average of 3.000 (4.000 scale).
Winners of the 2000 scholarship grants are Jared Lee, a safety from Brigham Young University majoring in history; Marcus Outzen, quarterback and management communications major at Florida State University; Brandon Steele, a linebacker and civil engineering major at Pennsylvania State University; and Mike Van Raaphorst, University of Southern California quarterback with a double major in political science and broadcast journalism.
"This furthers the NACDA Foundation's commitment to providing advanced educational opportunities," said NACDA President Deborah A. Yow, athletics director at the University of Maryland, College Park.
The 2000 Pigskin Classic saw Florida State defeat Brigham Young, 29-3, while Southern California stopped Penn State, 29-5, in the Kickoff Classic.
Lee is a two-time national all-academic choice and a 1999 all-Mountain West Conference academic selection. He led the Cougars in 1999 with 96 tackles, including 67 solo, which ranked fourth in the conference.
Outzen has been on the Atlantic Coast Conference honor roll three times, was named the top scholar-athlete at Florida State in 2000 and sported the highest grade-point average among teammates in his class as a junior.
Steele is an academic all-Big Ten Conference selection and has been on Penn State's dean's list in seven of eight semesters. He is a member of the Golden Key Honor Society and won two civil engineering scholarships.
Van Raaphorst was a first-team academic Pacific-10 Conference selection in 1999 and was a Marks Scholar recipient, awarded to student-athletes with a grade-point average of 3.000 or higher. He is ranked ninth on the Southern California career passing list with 232 completions and 19th for all-time total offense with 2,809 yards.
The four student-athletes will be honored during NACDA's 36th annual convention June 10-13.
The NACDA Foundation, founded in 1982, sponsors internship opportunities for aspiring athletics administrators at NACDA's national office. It also provides educational opportunities for NACDA members through a variety of workshops, clinics and seminars. The Foundation has awarded more than $9.5 million in scholarships since its inception.
Funding for the Foundation comes from the Kickoff and Pigskin Classics, whose proceeds also help fund the National Football Foundation and the American Football Coaches Association. These two games annually generate $420,000 in scholarships.
