Fall sports championships previews -- Women's Volleyball

The NCAA News

Division I

Dates and sites: Preliminary-round matches will be played on the campuses of competing institutions. Sixteen first- and second-round matches will be played November 29 through December 2, and regionals will be conducted December 6-7, 7-8 or 8-9. The semifinals and final will be December 13 and 15 at Cox Arena at Aztec Bowl in San Diego. San Diego State University will host the championship.

Field: The NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Committee will select the 64-team field, including at least one team from each of the eight districts. Thirty-one conferences have been granted automatic qualification; the remaining teams will be selected at-large.

Selection date: November 26.

2000 champion: Nebraska.

Top team contenders: Nebraska, Long Beach State, UCLA, Southern California, Stanford.

Players to watch: Greichaly Cepero and Nancy Metcalf (Nebraska); Cheryl Weaver and Tayyiba Haneef (Long Beach State); Kristee Porter (UCLA); April Ross (Southern California); Logan Tom (Stanford).

Division II

Dates and sites: Eight regionals will be conducted November 16-18 or 17-19 on the campuses of competing institutions. The finals will be November 29-December 1 on the campus of one of the participating institutions.

Field: Six teams from each of the eight regions will be selected to participate.

Selection date: November 11.

2000 champion: Hawaii Pacific.

Top team contenders: Hawaii Pacific, North Alabama, West Texas A&M, Truman.

Players to watch: Nia Tuitele (Hawaii Pacific); Shannon Stroud (West Texas A&M); Ashley Moffitt (North Alabama); Eliza Hoerner (Truman).

Division III

Dates and sites: All matches will be played on the campuses of competiting institutions. Eight regionals will be played November 8-10, quarterfinals will be played November 17, and the semifinals and final will be November 30-December1.

Field: Forty-eight teams will be selected based on conference and regional competition.

Selection date: November 4.

2000 champion: Central (Iowa).

Top team contenders: Central (Iowa), Elmhurst, Mount Saint Joseph's, Wisconsin-Whitewater, Washington (Missouri).

Players to watch: Rebecca Rotello [Washington (Missouri)]; Amanda Fark (Elmhurst); Angie Nielsen [Central (Iowa)]; Ginny Thomas (Mount Saint Joseph's), Melinda Erickson (Wisconsin-Whitewater).

As of September 26, Hawaii Pacific has won 40 consecutive matches dating back to August 27, 2000, and has its sights set on the NCAA Division II record of 46 straight set by Ferris State in 1984.
